Any updates (pictures) of your needle? I decided to combine two smaller ones into a single clump and plant my final larger one. It's been a bit windy this spring, but otherwise they are putting out new growth.

Yeah it has, supposed to get hurricane-force winds tonight so I'm protecting all my plants. Way too late in my opinion but I am finally starting to work on the frontyard.

Ok, just took updated pictures of everything in the yard!

Second seed grown Sabal Causiarum in the ground! Decided to plant this one in the ground as it wasn’t doing well in a pot anymore.IMG_5569.thumb.jpeg.f5e2e2740753e6c02a947d4ad2e7bbaf.jpeg

I also finally got my hands on a Heliconia Shiedeana! I will bring it in of course, unless somehow this sone 8 plant survives outside somehow.IMG_5570.thumb.jpeg.46d173dc48474122833414acff66df9b.jpeg

Seperated the small Ravanea Rivularis from the big one and planted it. Most likely will be an annual, unless I should protect it, but it’s probably too tropical.IMG_5571.thumb.jpeg.1536ef2bcf3da6ee2fcceeb886f1696c.jpeg

Sabal Louisiana is starting to grow a new frond since it was planted!IMG_5573.thumb.jpeg.703f53aa8298610586cb6b47cba9006e.jpeg

The cycad is starting to yellow, idk why but some people said it was because of a deficiency or sucking nutrients from the leaves.IMG_5574.thumb.jpeg.eef25b4690dc31040f5c317fd7b80998.jpeg

Needle Palm is doing good! It’s perfectly fine, it wasn’t the spear that pulled but the leaves, as the petiole to the damaged frond is starting to push out with a new spear next to it! Here are some pictuof the offshoots aswell.IMG_5575.thumb.jpeg.4a1d3affa1bfde042322a352a5d30758.jpegIMG_5576.thumb.jpeg.39d2e242fc4653b4bba192a8d19ca5da.jpegIMG_5577.thumb.jpeg.99d1d2d5dde2bbd9f221f06f153e7984.jpeg

Ehinocereus hybrid looking perfect after another winter, but something has been taking chunks out of it, as well as the Opuntia Fragillis next to it-IMG_5578.thumb.jpeg.a0e71998bd442b37807e5f30c637eff5.jpegIMG_5579.thumb.jpeg.d01155f56286f4ec3875d5841839450e.jpeg

Finally, the other Causiarum next to the needle is growing. Will most likely transplant it next year if it survives again.. I actually find it more impressive than my needle as it had less protection in there than the needle.IMG_5580.thumb.jpeg.b657ea3db77a5f607d9dfbe2fd68f2a9.jpeg

The Butia Capitata is doing really well since I planted it! Already working out pushing out it's third frond since I got it!

The palms will definitely love this heat that's finally coming! @Leelanau Palms does it ever get into the 80's a lot up there?

Yes, hoping my needles will accelerate. Nice warm rain today! Wind has been hard on them so far. Yes, summers can have lots of 80's up here. It can depend on the wind direction, with the lake cooling things in the first half of the summer. Hoping the reflected and stored heat from the house, concrete, and stone will accentuate the heat for mine.

The Butia is already starting to outpace the needle palm in growth! I would’ve thought putting it in ground would slow the growth of it down, but I guess it didnt.

Probably not the farthest north as you are at a similar latitude to northern Italy, southern France, and the PNW, but could potentially be farthest inland palms!

I’m not certain, but I believe I’ve seen stuff on here about Butias planted in Portland and Seattle, both of which are farther north. Sagos I’m not as sure about.

Regardless, yours are a far more aggressive zone push and are way farther inland than any others I know of

Good work! Yes, I'm still alive up here in northern Michigan. I planted three needle palms in spring 2024. They started slowly but were growing well by the end of the summer. I elected to mulch their bases and cover them with trash cans. No heat. I'll share pictures soon. I've held off uncovering them until the nighttime temps are a bit higher.

How cold did it end up getting there? I bottomed out at -5 degrees down here in January.

The lowest temp I saw in our area was -1. I may uncover mine here today, while keeping an eye on the weather.

Here is the Butia and the Cycad frim rhe pics I just took. Both will definitely make it this year! Probably the most northern Butia Odorata and Cycas Revoluta?

People grow palms in Ontario and Quebec too.

Green Dragan lives in Waterloo, Ontario and as far as I know has the most extensive collection in Ontario.  He goes to great lengths to protect.

There is also James Palms just outside Georgetown/Brampton Ontario

Pineapple Dan is in Burlington

Scott is in Kingston, Ontario

This guy is somewhere in Quebec, I'm not familiar with him

And then there was Coconut Mike in Montreal but he passed away and is channel seems to be gone.

If you drive on the other side of the river in SW Ontario, over to the Niagara Region you will see the odd palm and exotic.

Ok so the nursery near me were selling these large Musa “Basjoo” for 30 bucks. There’s bo way I wasn’t leaving without one 😂

I give those away when my clump of basjoo gets too large. Looks good.
