Late start planting for shade.  Not sure why I didn't plant trees to shade my palm plantings back when I finished the terracing in this area 20 years ago.  About 1/2 way up and one section I did plant and have some nice shade year round.  But at least 50 or more feet of terrace should have been done back then.  So yesterday and today I transplanted 4 Kukui Nut trees high on the terraces.  Hope they grow fast.

These are the 4 just planted.

In another location I planted one back in 2020 when Covid hit and it's about 17 feet tall now and beginning to spread a bit.  the second picture was from 2022.

I'm not sure what the difference is between your sun/heat intensity is as compared to mine, but without adequate shade in my climate "my goose would be cooked". Essentially I would lose over half my collection without it. I'm not a soothsayer, but I knew than in addition to arranging my garden plantings for how it would eventually look, I would also have to plan for the cover (shade) that would be required for the development of some healthy recruits. So despite the additional expense, and labor required to also do the somewhat exhaustive chore of digging additional holes in my moderately caliche tainted yard, I knew I had to "pay the piper" as soon as possible, or else suffer through the consequences (and possible re-planting ordeal), not to mention the time wasted. I'm glad I "bought some insurance" as soon as possible. I suppose that like me, most people "learn the hard way" first, so when planning my 2nd garden, my prior experience most definitely paid off.

Hi 56°, Lo 45° .13 in. rain

Summers can get up to about 100 on my white reflective painted roof thermometer.  Winter night lows maybe 63 at the worst on average but I have seen 59 once or twice like 5 am.  My lot came w/lots of scrub trees that provide enough shade w/addition of shade cloth in places.  I have planted a number of trees for shade 20 odd years ago and wish I had done more.  The land above these little guys is a 6 acre farm growing vegetables.  I believe some of their irrigation water flows under ground to the top of this slope and my give them a little help beyond my irrigation.

Yea, we got about an inch over the past week.  Not a lot, but for Wai`anae it's not bad.  Even turned off the irrigation for one round.
