My pygmy palm is not looking to happy.

I live in Fort Johnson Louisiana where is bounces from being 9a-8b. On the USDA site this location is considered 9a. I planted a pgymy palm last summer and is now taking damage from the cold which it does get down to the high 30s not going lower than 36. What should I do with my palm for resistance or is it too late for it to recover?

These aren't reliably winter hardy in 8b/9a. Looks like a somewhat recent planting.

My butia palms both had a similar issue last winter and the color slowly turned changed then I got spear pull, (they both died 😭) but you could put a horticultural fleece for warmth or something similar and a plastic bag to keep water out or cling film / cellophane wrap

I guess you both get points on that one.

You will definitely have to cover it when temps drop below 30°F. Maybe an inverted 30-gal trash can + a 40W light bulb. Watch the weather reports and be prepared. Often in the SE, we go from 50s and rain to teens and sun in 24 hours. Keeping the crown dry prior to a freeze will help.

^^^ LOL! Too funny! 🤣

Those things are always getting fried and replanted here just like Foxtails, OP get a Roeb X Reclinata hybrid or better yet a Reclinata X Roeb hybrid and never look back!

They pot up well as house plants , and then bring it in on cold nights . Here it's a house plant all the way till spring when I put all my house plants outside .

My sickly one  rebounded amazingly with epsom salts and fertilizer .
