Hello!

I am adding to my palm yard and decided it’s missing an icy blue Butia.

Whether it’s a butiaxjubea or regular Butia that’s fine with me I just really am seeking the icy blue color.

Does anyone know if the color changes over time or different ways to influence more blue?

I am in Surprise, AZ so something relatively local or willing to pay for shipping depending on total price.

Thank you so much!

@jordantlewis3, I wondered about the color of Butia myself several years ago.  From what I understand the color isn't influenced by external factors such as sun exposure or soil type but just variation in the species.  I grew up a seedling from a very silver mother palm back in the early 2000's and it turned out green.  :( Your best bet is to search through available palms and hope for the best.  Good luck!

Nice, I've never seen a specific colored Butia listed for sale before!  Good to know...

I'm hoping mine sets seed this spring, and if so we shall see how the seedlings turn out....it's the one in the middle below.

The one on the right is a hybrid and is flowering now.

@Scott W I am still envious of that hybrid on the right!  If I'd kept the sprinklers off of mine and killed off the mealybugs it might be that big by now...sadly it's still only about 2 feet tall...  :(

Same hybrid from the ebay seller?

Yep, bought in 2019 and planted in December 2019.  It's suffered crown rot from a sprinkler hitting it, and successive mealybug infestations...it's a minor miracle that it's still alive!  I was honestly about to trash it, but then I saw your photo of the same hybrid sometime last year.  So instead I've doubled down on getting it to survive!

Is that a straight Jubaea on the left there?

Edit; Also having moved from the PNW to NC, I see more butias with the distinct "clear silver" appearance out here, whereas many on the west coast in WA and Oregon were closer to the green side of the spectrum.  Whatever that may mean, I don't know.

The seller in Florida palmsgalore777? I have a couple in containers from 3 years ago that show decent blue, I bought one last spring though and it’s green. They said it would grow out of it with sun, but not so far. How have yours compared?

Why yes it is!  It's been in the ground for about 7 years now.  I have another thread regarding it....

Yes, that's the one.  I think her son runs the store and nursery now, as it's a man who replies to eBay messages.  They are in Tallahassee and I'm planning a visit next time I'm out there to visit my daughter at FSU.

As you can see in the pic above, mine has faired well...it's the one on the right, and it just started flowering, and only about 7 years in ground from a 3 gallon!!! Anxious to see if the seeds turn out to be as large as they say they are.   Most likely though I'll wind up hybridizing it at some point.

Your picture definitely restores my confidence in these being a hybrid , you can see the clear difference over a standard Butia.

Thank you for your response! Sorry I am just now getting back to it. I have a bismarckia on one side of my yard and I want to put a blue Butia or Butia x Jubea…I found the post below that mentions palmsgalore777 on eBay that has stunning blue hybrids. Thanks again!
