IT'S HERE! Palm Weevil in coastal Oceanside, next is Pendleton then greater LA area.

I have been trying to watch to see progress up the coast of San Diego county for the Palm Weevil since being spotted in Tijuana a decade or so ago. When I worked doing HVAC repairs, I drove all over so it was easy to see many areas. I retired 1.5 years ago so my "county" travel is less, now more nationally.. (yay)

Anywhooo.. I rarely drive this direction by Buddy Todd park, a park less than a half mile from me and within 1.5 miles of the coast. In places you can see the ocean. But here's what I saw driving west recently at dusk one evening. (I went back a few days later to take these pics)

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Another view of these two.

When I moved here, this park had a feature I loved, a small paved 1 way road that meandered through and you parked to the side.  15 years ago or so, the made a center parking area and the old road became a wide walking path. Unless I got out to walk it, I couldn't do a tally count, but I could see one other damaged one in the center. From there I could see another 4 or 5 not showing issues yet.

This is, at most, 3 miles south of Camp Pendleton. This is a large "Natural barrier" to the greater LA area.  Camp Pendleton has few people on the coast, or anywhere really, and actually few CIDPs relative to land size. (18 ? miles of n-S So Cal coast and 22ish E-W) So it's heading north. not sure what the driving force is, food, climate, inundation? But's there's your update.

I am glad that I will be deceased before the beetle gets this far north.

Congratulations on your retirement, Bill !

A question for those near Bonita or have any info. Do these spread like "fire" in that it's ever outward? A survivor from the first pass may be safe for a while, or they stay until total destruction?

I ask of the Bonita area as that's where an early "field talk" gathering was due to heavy infestation several years ago. Are there any CIDPs left there, or barren or?

This abomination is going northbound. They're not going south, I'll tell you that much.

lots of devastation here in My home town of Carlsbad. its now in north Vista and Fallbrook. Soon Orange county will be in deep sh*$!!!

Canary's will be a thing of the past eventually for us in so cal. It will be interesting to see how far north it goes.

I'm more worried about Banana moth as it targets far more species of palms than the Weevil does and its in So Cal making its destruction debut as we speak.
