Sabal rosei - post winter storm Gerri 2024 update

Sabal rosei…. 90 hours below freezing, 9.9F ultimate low, no supplemental heat and here we are. WOW.  This is a cold hardy contender, and thus far I’m rating these as DFW hardy..  I probably didn't need to cover it this year, but I really loved the amount of growth I got over the year, and didn't want to risk losing any of it.  Turns out I don't need to worry!  I will say that I am pleasantly surprised.

Just wanted to mention. I, and I’m sure many others on this forum really appreciate your video’s . Same goes for @Allen in bitter cold Tennessee.

Thank you!!! I very much enjoy documenting because I hope maybe something helps someone else down the road.  There is various information scattered all over the place but having someone local to me, who has trialed, errored, been through winters would help me gain not only confidence but pick the right palms, long term!  It’s really why I started germinating and offering seedlings through my little hobby nursery lol.  Mixing that experience of growing with the things that work, and propagate those versus the ones that will bring dissapointment.

Thank you very much!  I’m glad people get value out of them.  If nothing else it’s a good log for me and a way to look back.

wait until we uncover the tender stuff tomorrow when the threat of ice is gone.  I don’t cover anything minus 3-4 of my butias and jubea hybrids so I don’t take chances on them !

Hello,

it's still alive ? you had spear pull ?

Posted

Oh yea sure is alive and doing great.  It took some minor browning on the tips and just like S. uresana it is throwing up some seed stalks which won’t amount to anything.  Surprised me a bit but speaking to some folks who have these as mature specimens and grow them, it’s very normal.  This should be a big year for this particular palm.

tried to post pictures on my mobile but it didn’t work.  Will try later on.

The Rosei I received last year as a seedling is doing great pushing out strap leaves.  I brought it back to Wisconsin from Texas this summer to baby it.  It's handling the Wisconsin summer weather extremes with no issues.

Here is our Sabal rosei (Augusta,GA parent) today.  These seed earlier than other trunking palmettos just like the uresanas (both forms)

I've got another 150 of these germinating now, which means... I will probably release some more seedlings soon enough.

The one I had in Oregon proved to be very hardy as well.  I think the hardiness ratings you see online may be a bit conservative which is the exact opposite of what you usually see about plants.  I sure wish I could've brought it with me, but I have a small one I'm growing out.  It was also the fastest growing Sabal in my collection.

I've got about two dozen 3 yr old seedlings, some 1 yr and germinating about 150 more now from the above.. They are rockstars, and they row in a very unique growth form.. I need to document it actually as I have seen it with the parent palm, as well as the seedlings.

Any shoe available for scale, so that I can estimate girth of stem base?

Update on our rosei as of this weekend... seeds harvested, fertilized heavily, and away we go with another few months of growth.  I absolutely love this palm and will have about a dozen seedlings to offer here soon enough now that I have more on the way.
