Was wondering what caused the damage to the fronds sun, cold, or not enough water?

Definitely cold damage! Here's a pic of a Veitchia arecina I purposely left outside, unprotected, to test it's cold hardiness. Lowest reading I had was one night at 29F,with multiple nights of 32-33F over a two week period. Just moved it into the greenhouse today, for some quick recovery. It looked great, with no visible damage, until our winter freezes began.

Thank you!! I also had some freezing weather for a few nights at least it looks like it might survive I think our cold weather is over predictions for what they are worth look good will keep my fingers crossed!!! @aztropic what do you think the survival rates look like?

Agree with @aztropic.  Even the dwarf variant of Areca catechu doesn't care for anything below 35F.  We've had them in town, but too much brown after winter to keep in a display garden.  You'll want to keep it out of the cold and watch for fungal infections to give it the best shot of living.

Agree: cold damage. You need to provide protection and supplemental heat for this tropical palm.

I think both of our plants will survive. We have had at least the last 4 winters without any freezing temps,so it was easy to push the zones. Our 2 - 3 weeks of cold weather this year was just a minor setback with light damage, but everything should recover barring another sub 30F night.:greenthumb:

I should also mention that Cuban royals growing in 5 and 15 gallon pots right next to my test subject, had zero damage. That's the species desert dwellers should plant more of, when considering a crownshafted palm for their own gardens.

I am just so jealous that you actually managed to find one. It's been on my dream list for decades but nobody seems interested in growing them here.

So many sharks on the mail order these days and with the strict quarantine here I can't use the good nurseries in Hawaii or Florida.
