Such handsome, colorful little palms from Madagascar. Although they are clumping, there only seems to be one dominant reed like stem at one time with adjacent stems low almost like a ground cover. A protected, semi shady spot in the garden and thrives on humidity. I have no idea about cold tolerance, but they might be hardier than they look. Planted as seedlings about seven years ago.

a couple of shots of the leaves.

The stems are very thin and I can’t believe none have been broken off.

That is a clumper I could actually live with. Very  pretty and probably impossible to get.

Relatively cold hardy, I'd say, but mine don't look nearly as good as yours! I'll try to get some pictures soon.

Peachy, I kind of thought this little palm might appeal to you despite your hard line concerning clumpers.

Richard, add it to your list man, cool minimal footprint palms.

Matt, if anyone could grow these, you can. As fragile as they look, they have been tough little guys and I figured some cold tolerance as well.

My two. As you can see, the main trunk on one died a while ago but the sucker is still going strong.

Funky. I wonder how I would use that in a landscape. Very handsome, even the stems.

A quick update. Man, a couple of the stems are starting to get kinda tall with no increase in girth. Still nifty little palms though.

Tim, do you remember seeing these in Madagascar? While some were below the knees, many were overhead on reedy stems, as I recall. The new red leaf always got my attention.

Hey Kim, yes, I do remember seeing many similar looking diminutive palms with red colored leaves, As I look at those habitat photos again, there is quite a bit of variability within, what seems to be, the same species. That seems to be consistent with palm reference descriptions. I enjoy reliving that journey through those pictures even though I don’t know what most of the species are.

Are you on island soon?
