Southeastern Palm Society meeting in Brunswick, GA on Feb 24th

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Greetings,

I will be hosting the February 24th meeting for the Southeastern Palm Society in Brunswick, GA, if anyone would be interested in attending. We will enjoy a walking tour around 10 am of my 1/2 acre downtown yard landscaped with 45+ palm varieties, 20 varieties of cycads, and various citrus, bromeliads and other subtropicals which are thriving unprotected in a warm 9a coastal Georgia climate.

If interested, email me for details. Or you can join our society for free (below link) and begin to receive our quarterly newsletter and information/details regarding our future meetings.

Best regards,

Jim

Took some photos of the place at our 2023 Joint Summer Meeting.  Would love to see some photos of this tour.

Allen - here are three photos taken in my neighborhood during the tour. One of a very tall Butia, one of the tallest Sabal palmettos in Brunswick, and one of several tall Phoenix canariensis (tallest in Georgia) at the Old Glynn County courthouse. I'll upload some yard photos later.

I signed up. I dunno that I'd be able to make any trips to Georgia or whatnot, but I'm a relative newbie currently in East Mississippi (maybe 10 miles from the Alabama border) and I'd like to connect with more locals to see what works and what doesn't. The majority of what I'm growing is indoors in pots, and honestly most of what I've got has been gifted to me.

I've got a variety of Sabals germinating since it seems like they're my best bet for growing outdoors here, especially with these crazy winters we've been having. There's probably more palms growing in the wild here than in people's yards, especially this deep in the country. I guess i need to spend a weekend driving around and asking to collect seeds from what I see in people's yards and, when my health cooperates, take a hike through the woods and see what I can find and transplant to my yard. Anyway, just really looking to see what works here. Pictures of Florida and Hawaii and Australia are cool and all, but we go from triple digits to single digit temps and we wander from swampy humidity to droughts on a whim.
