Hello,

Just found this Texas Palms group! I am in Dallas.  Here are some pics from my yard. Had some large W. Filifera, but the freeze of 2021 got them. The trees you see here survived 1 degree.

Anybody here have any data on Guihaia argyrata during the 21 freeze?

A few years back I seem to remember people thinking these would be reaaaaaally harder.

Welcome! You've got some great palms that survived some pretty terrible cold. I look forward to seeing and hearing more about your plantings over time.

I shared these in another thread already but wanted to share again in here because these are some of the best Washingtonia you can find in DFW and are impressive just in general.

Thanks for posting. I have quite a few young date palms, and I have been curious about what temps I can expect them to get damaged. 19F without noticeable damage is pretty encouraging.

Here's a local business in Harlingen who really likes the blue palms!  5 total Bismarckia and one Brahea armata (lower right).  Florescent green trunks are not typical of the species!  😅

If you're looking to rehome them, I can take them but I can't promise I won't kill them.   I can offer you a cup of Canadian coffee or a fine Canadian whiskey and some conversation in trade.

19f in Katy? I didn’t think it got that cold.

I haven’t seen much either, but there wasn’t much cold sensitive in the first place.

Dipped below 24F at 2 AM and hit 19F just before sunrise. This freeze seems to be oddly gentle compared to any other dip into the teens in the past few years. Perhaps it's the pretty short duration?

Snowing 3” is considered “gentle” at this point?

Compared to 2021 super mega apocalypse, 2022 apocalypse, and 2024 great apocalypse

...this is relatively benign...

...I think this is even more mild than 2018 mini apocalypse.

Of course I would rather have another 13 consecutive years 9b and above only run. Maybe if we have at least 5 years or so of that people will slowly forget the cold and we can be on track to look like pre-2021 Houston again 😄 (always the optimist)

I think so, short duration makes sense.  My similar sized queen had no damage at 20°F in January 2018.  This is why I discourage folks from looking at a list of ultimate low temperatures in an area and assume that 19°F or 20°F is going to kill off all the queens in that area.  We have documented proof that it's not the case.

It was the same at my place.  I was up so was able to see the temps, but for whatever reason I took so much damage.

I think you should try and grow Livistona australis.

Was thinking about this this morning.  Seems like a good plant for Houston.  Heard they're uber cold hardy.

For the record I have three and they love the clay and the heat and the water.  I know where to get 10g ones.

Consistent with my experience in Brownsville.  Got down to 28F here.  You can tell the freeze happened up in McAllen... tender shit looks fried.  But down by us, the triangles and foxtails and royals and cocos and majesties are pretty well the same as they were before the freeze.  Except for my newly planted majesty, which got nipped, but that makes sense.  Wonder if maybe it was cause we had like two straight weeks of 40s and 50s leading up to it.

Texas is № 1 and the new palm capital. There's so much ground to cover over the many threads. Growers must be making a killing selling palms to supply the demand. Cool.

I agree, they are very tough.  I know of a couple back in Oregon that would make it through the winters.  I have a couple of nitida that are ready to plant as well.

Same thing here, I can’t see any damage yet on my Queen palm and I did not protect.  Slight bronzing on my two Mexican Fan palms on fronds that are flat to the sky.  So glad it didn’t get down to 16 like they thought at one time.

I’m perplexed that I did have about 50% leaf damage to my anacua tree.  Weird…

In any case I’m psyched that my over reaction and pessimism before it hit was all for not. 😂 Hope I get over my PTSD with time. Hahaha, we’ll see.

Of the few queens that have been planted at the Riverwalk in the last year or two, some showed minor damage today, while others looked undamaged:

Yes I saw widespread 15-17F there, was already in teens there sometime that night while most of the rest of Houston was above 20F. Blame the snowpack?

Definitely the snow lol . Even the queens in league city look pretty bad so it definitely got cold over here… I’m going to Galveston this weekend I’m sure the royals look like A** lol

The coldest temps were in Louisiana so the further east the worse the damage. If I hadn’t protected my queens I’m pretty sure they’d be toast. I walked around today in the yard and everything looks much, much worse. Standard Agave Americana is damaged heavily which surprised me. 50 shades of brown minus the Yuccas

I would assume so, I didn't protect it on purpose.   That thing has looked terrible ever since I planted it.   Life is too short for crappy looking palms that are limping along.

The NWS Houston site is not too far from League City/Dickinson, and low temps there were 18°F.

Which is strange, because the heaviest snow totals in Texas from what I've seen were actually focused across 59 (which cut through areas of Inner Loop, then went east across Liberty county through Golden Triangle). Brazoria county didn't get all that much.

Understandable . The two little ones I’ve grown in the ground have now survived two freezes but they can only be protected for probably 4-5 more years till they get massive :v
