Can Chamaedorea tepejilote and Chamaedorea microspadix live in the same space for some time?

I got some seedlings of Chamaedorea microspadix (Over 14 seedlings) and Chamaedorea tepejilote (3 seedings), they still don't shoot out their first leaf, I planted them in 2 different pots, in a slightly bigger and deeper pot I planted 11 palms, 8 Chamaedorea microspadix and my 3 Chamaedorea tepejilote, since both of these species like the shade, can they live in the same pot for some months? I plan on transplanting the Chamaedorea microspadix into the ground when they are more developed and the Chamaedorea tepejilote (I hope its the clumping form) will go into a big pot when they start putting out pinnate leaves. The palms are planted in coco coir and it's practically spring here already, I hope they grow fast. I will upload pictures when I get home later.

I have mature plants of both of these palms. When available , I bought two Tepejelote seedlings and one Microspadix. Of the two Tepe’s one is clumping and one is single trunk. The Microspadix is prolific in pushing seeds so now I have quite a few of them around my house. Right next to the Tepejelote I have a potted “offspring” of the Microspadix and it goes nicely . They share the same leaf color and texture. . The Tepe’s are now 25 years old and very large , planted in the ground. Both of these need shade to look their best. My large Tepe’s are getting more sun now so they burn a bit in the summer. Keep in mind that the Tepejelote will get very tall while the Microspaix remains under 6’ so they will look very full when close together. The only problem is providing enough shade for both at the same time. One curious note , my clumping Tepejelote started a new above ground clump on one of the stems , about 2’ above ground , sending out multiple new “stems” ….kind of cool. I included a picture of the above ground clump that formed over a year ago with a partial view of the Microspadix to the left. It is a very narrow area next to my house so it is hard to get a good photo. Harry

Mine here in Northern CA has been fruiting since very young. There are three separate palms with male and female palms so I get lots of seeds.

Mine fruited once but the seeds never germinated. That was about 7-8 years ago. Harry

Good luck with those sprouts. You may have a better growing climate than me so it may not take 20 years to get tall like mine. When I got mine , they had just gotten their first frond and had already outgrown the seedling tube .The last picture I posted was showing the morning light through the leaflets so they look much better in the afternoon when there is shade. The leaflets are thin like the Microspadix , somewhat translucent, unlike the C. Radicalis . The palms are now about 25 years old and about 8’ tall or maybe taller. The clumping one is taller than the single trunk by about 6” or so. They want a good supply of water or they start looking shabby , but are tough and come back quickly. That’s pretty much all I know about these.

Ok , so I went out this morning under cloud cover to try to get better pics of the two Tepejelote palms . This is looking up so you can see the fronds. You can see how the light passes through the leaflets . The first is my single trunk and the second is the clumping one. Harry

I will plant my C. tepejilote in a shady protected space when they grow up so sunburn and wind will not be a big problem. I might plant one of the microspadix close to them to make that space look bushy.

As time goes on the Tepejelote will out pace the Microspadix and the latter will look miniature in comparison. I think if you are able to give mostly shade to both it should look full with the Microspadix filling in the lower portion , so long as overcrowding doesn’t occur. Harry

Here's my Tepejilote and Microspadix mixture. Shady position. Both doing great, 6-7 years from seed.

I think I will plant them together after all, microspadix will provide protection for C. tepejilote while they grow.

That's same as I did and I would do it again. Meanwhile Queen palm grow enough to provide a canopy of some kind.

The Chamaedorea microspadix that were in the smaller pot just hit the ground. The pot was too small for them.

The palms in the bigger pot have grown a lot. I have lost none of them.

Most of these are Chamaedorea microspadix

The biggest Chamaedorea tepejilote is starting to show those stilt roots.

There's 13 palms in this pot;

-Chamaedorea microspadix (8)

-Chamaedorea tepejilote (3)

-Chamaedorea pochutlensis (2)

I just don't know how I'm going to transplant them when they get bigger but that's a problem for the future.
