Island Canery Date Palm Question - Southern California, USA

Hello all,

I'm new the community and have a question about the palm tree I have on the backyard of my new home I just purchased.  The palm tree is really tall estimated about 30 feet. It has a large amount of root exposed on the trunk and pretty much large expansion of root all around.  It is a nice beautiful tree and I would love to keep it as long as I could.  First, I'm curious why there are a lot of root on the trunk and if it's safe to remove some? Secondly, is it also safe to plant some tree around it.

Really appreciate your input in advance.
