Will this need to be protected below 25F?

This looks to be a zone pusher for me, but I felt like taking a chance since I have always wanted one:

I don't think it's a zone push for 9b unless you're thinking that it's too hot.  @Laaz is/was growing them in 9a SC.  I think too much sun is your enemy with these.

Great to hear, I was actually more worried about the cold, yes I am going to put it in a dappled canopy position. I can already tell at this point that for most species the sun here on the island is too intense unless starting from a larger Palm or a handful of more robust sun loving palms. (Washys/Med Fan).

Forgot to mention the need for well draining soil that's not alkaline.  I don't have the canopy yet for one and would need to amend this clay quite a bit as well.  I had pure sand at my place in Flour Bluff - what's yours like there where you are?

Pure beach sand but I dig out a big section and replace it with organic in ground soil and try to leave it as loose as possible.

There is a 5’ Chamaedorea radicalis  over top to provide canopy as well as the Med Fan in the pot that I put there as well to provide more canopy and it is between the side of my house with a fence and neighbors house also providing shade at this south facing position that stays fairly moist:

Mine is still kicking, refuses to die lol. Planted in 2021, moved it in 2022 (spent all season recovering from transplant shock), got fried by late afternoon sun from the hottest summer ever (105F+ for pretty much all of July and August) in 2023, and mostly fried again from 18.5F in January 2024 (I only covered it with a cardboard box, nothing else).

Rough life, but it is cold hardier than I had expected and it looks to be a tough little Palm too! Excellent! :greenthumb:

I have both of these now thanks to Floribunda. Will try one in the ground thanks to this thread. How much bigger does Hoehnei get then Wedd ? I wonder if Patric has tried to cross with Butia yet 🤔

Problem is they don't produce much pollen,  so back crossing to Butia may be difficult.  I had four hoehnei and three weddellianum flower last year but very little pollen.  Figured I try queen pollen on it but nothing took.  This was also the first flowering for these so hoping for better luck this year 🙏
