Can anyone identify the insects I have on my Pygmy Date palm (Roebelinni)?  It looks like there are at least two types and damage to the fronds is occurring. Thank you so much for any help you can provide!  I am in Central Florida.   I would also like to know how to treat my palm. It looks very unhealthy 😟

@Mwilt I'm not sure what kind of bug that is, I haven't seen one like it before.  Usually palms get mealybugs or scale insects...but those fuzzy black bugs are not either of those.  The only thing I could find that sorta looked close was a carpet beetle larvae.  Hopefully someone else can ID them and say whether they are bad or good bugs!  It's hard to say if there's a small white scale insect there, because Roebellini also have "tomentum" that looks a lot like a small white scale bug.

As far as the health goes, it looks like it needs some fertilizer.  The translucent light green splotches are typical of a Potassium deficiency, and frequently Roebellini get Magnesium deficiencies too.  The usual recommendation here is 1.5lb of 8-2-12 fertilizer for every 100sqft of canopy area, 4x per year.  The best stuff is probably PalmGain or Florikan, but I frequently use Sunniland Palm 6-1-8.  For the 8-2-12 mix, a solo Roebellini that's 6' in diameter is 3.14 * 3 * 3 = 28sqft.  So you'd use about 1.5lb * 28 / 100 = 0.4lb for a single trunk palm.  If you have a double or triple just estimate the square footage of canopy and adjust the amount.  Sprinkle evenly under the canopy area and avoid dumping any clumps of fertilizer.

Thank you so much, Merlyn!  I will fertilize ASAP.

I agree that these look like beetle larva.  Particularly like carnivorous ones that are perhaps feeding on parasites on your palm.  Do you see any scale, aphids, mealy bugs or mites?

I can’t see clearly, but perhaps there is a Twice Stabbed Lady Beetle in pic #1.  Is that scale all over in that pic?  Hard to see.

Yes, that's it - the Twice-stabbed Lady Beetle! It was very hard to see in the photos, but the insects have the same red marking and the larvae are the same too!  Thank you SO much!!  I guess I need to treat the scales and the "black bugs" are helping with that.
