Butia capitata

The good old butia palm a very common palm in the 80s and 90s every nursery had them selling them as frost resistant along with drought resistant so you do see them in some tough country planted in pairs at property entrances and along driveways the fruit makes a good jam an incredibly tough palm this one is 20 years old grown from seed being one of the first palms i germinated planted in a dry part of my garden

Is this actually B.capitata? It doesn't resemble the B.odoratas sold here in the states.

I think Capitatas are more silver than that

Could be I only know I grew it from seed and my palm knowledge back when I was  learning about palms there was no internet and very limited books available I just assumed it was a butia capita with not a lot of references to go by

Looks like from the size of your palm flowers are quite a while away but they make nice jam so well worth the wait

The only time I was able to beat the squirrels to the fruit , they tasted like apricot to me, very sweet! I can see why it would make good jam. Harry

I have made a small batch of jam many years ago I might have to keep an eye out for some fresh seeds now

I’ve collected around 10kg of fruit at a guess off my own ones last week. The fruit is in the fridge waiting for some more bunches to ripen. Then I’m going to put down a batch to make palm wine. I’ve got a 90L fermenter so I’m hoping to make around 120  bottles of the stuff.
