Small species suitable for indoor growing?

Recommended Posts

I'm hoping to compile a list of the smallest palm species, and specifically those of the smallest which would be suitable for growing indoors under these conditions:

I have a "plant room" where all my other plants are (Bromeliads, Tillandsia, and a variety of other plants).

I've got tons of lights (full spectrum very bright LED panels and bars - they are sufficient for growing Tillandsia so you know they're good) but the palms would be off to the side catching the excess rays, so probably species which grow in shade or moderate light would be good.

Temps range from about 64F to 77F

Humidity fluctuates between 45-60%

By smallest species, I really mean the smallest possible species which might be suitable for the above conditions.

I do have Dypsis minuta (see my recent / first post about the seed I germinated) but that one probably needs more humidity and it's only 1/2" tall right now anyway 😂

I appreciate any species lists and other advice / info

Thank you

Small Chamaedorea sps like C. metallica, ernesti augusti, possibly C. geonomiformis could work well indoors.

Imagine other bifoid leaf / " Whale Tail " leaf -type  sps like C. tuerckheimii, and sullivaniorum, could work indoors.  From some discussions here through the years, C. tuerckheimii  may be a bit of a prima donna to keep happy,  but there are members here have grown some great looking specimens.. so..  Your set up sounds ideal, imo.

Unless i missed the boat, -so to say-  Don't recall all that many discussions surrounding cultivation experiences with C. sullivaniorum, oddly enough.

..I'm sure others will add on other sps from various genera to add to your list..

There is a subforum for growing plants indoors and in pots.  Better off having this post moved there.

Do you know how I can get this post moved? How do I contact a moderator?

This looks cool! Could you list some of the species? Are they species which stay smallish (within context of the palm family) or area these babies of large species? Thanks

Small is relative lol. Just off the top of my head, I've got a couple L. Weddellanium, a Rhaphis Excelsea, a couple Dypsis Pembana, Livistona Rotundifolia, ummm.. I've got a whole thread "Mississippi Squad" in this sub forum with more details and individual pics of everything. My older threads "Patio Squad" and "Indoor Squad" have some good info too on what I kept alive and what I killed.

I guess once things calm down with the family and before I go back to work, I need to do another YouTube video too. Humble brag, but I've got some really cool and exotic stuff growing in a bedroom.... And I have to keep it in a bedroom due to an army of kittens.

Hello! Wife and I love you channel! Chamaedoreas are probably gonna be your best bet, because those are usually easiest to find. Chamaedorea tenella, metallica, tuerckheimii stay pretty small. Chuniophoenix nana, Linospadix minor, Areca minuta, Dypsis louvelii would also be good candidates but those are pretty hard to find. Those all can stay small like only a couple of feet tall mature. There are more but those are the few I can think of right now. Then there are plenty of palms that get bigger and can grow indoors as well! Hope this helps a little!!
