Snatched from the jaws of death

While industriously placing some finishing touches on my newly installed fish pond, I chanced to see my little Angel Face wandering about with something green in her mouth. I had to extricate myself from a very awkward position (on my bum, in the mud, wedged between a Bangalow palm and the pond) and go to find out what she was merrily munching upon. It was only my Chamaedorea metallica that took me 3 years to find. Nobody has them now, not even at the last 3 PACSOA shows had any. Immediate first aid was required. There was no time to go hunting for the seedling pot or  burrow through 50 cubic metres of the pot pile to find one. In desperation I grabbed some seaweed solution and the nearest cup from the cupboard ( a 1968 Mikasa, Silk Flowers for those with taste enough to show interest) and placed my poor wounded baby in it, to soak up all those revitalising vitamins.  As it was out of the pot anyway, I decided to pot it up a tiny fraction. Yes I know it's totally the wrong time of year but it is now a house pet so won't really know the Winter Solstice is almost upon us.  Three days have passed since this disastrous incident occurred and the little palm is recuperating beautifully in it's updated residence. I have included a photo of him today and another shot of the callously unrepentant Angel Face.  (making a rather rude face for the camera)

But how are going to get the root ball out the container when repotting?

The problem is Peachy, that you have the wrong sort of dog...my viscious guard animal protects my palms relentlessly day and night, as per photo!

The shape is quite deceptive. There is enough room inside the pot for a minimum of 2 years growth. The opening is wide enough to get a rootball through and the rounded sides hold the roots down enough to just slide them out.  Even if the worst scenario is looked at, I can just smash the pot with a hammer as I can easily make another one but so far I have never had to do that.

It's only the Pekingese who are naughty, I use my trained 'attack to kill' Chihuahuas as guardians of the infant flora

I'm quick on the trigger, when the target's not much bigger, than a Peke's bum.

Ok just as long as you know what your doing but you are a dog breeder and only let your dogs go to a good home with love and care and all the precious things that are needed to raise such quality dogs I feel my palms are the same way they only go to good homes with lots of love and care now I certainly hope my little Metallica is getting the right kind of love and care not in the jaws of a palm eating runaway bandit that eats rare palms for the fun of it I notified the palm police with Tim Brisbane being the officer in charge of this case 🤣

Thank you once again.

Thank you once again.

I have had Pekingese all my adult life but these days they are very uncommon and I only see them at dog shows. If I take them anywhere nobody knows what they are !  I thought (mistakenly) that you were posting to praise my amazing pottery skills and nearly swoon about my talent in getting red glaze to fire properly, but alas ....just another ceramic art philistine. 🙄  20 years ago I swore never to touch clay or glazes again. It was always my day job to fall back on but with the current inflation and my fixed income, at the age that most people are choosing a comfortable coffin,  I have had to go back to work.  All the well cared for furniture in the guest room went to charity and the space is now my studio. The room was wasted anyhow.  I don't like anyone enough to ask over for lunch let alone stay over ! At least I will never run out of planters !

Please don't smash that adorable pot with a hammer. Don't wait too long to shift the little Chamaedorea metallica. When the seasons change and it's growing securely and ready for the outdoors, save the pot as well as the plant! It's so cute and bright, brings to mind a spring tulip in Stockholm.

Dogs mauling palms! Lack of proper training, no?

Angel Face is only 6 months old and raising her has been relatively pain free.  I think she bumped a pot and knocked it over then seeing a plant just laying on the deck was too much temptation for a youngster. Thank you for the compliment on the pot. It reminds me of of a newly picked tomato.  I make those pots in all colours and sizes, free standing, wall pots and hanging pots so losing the odd one is not a great sacrifice but I always get them out sans damage to plant or pot. The little C  metallic is in total harmony where I have placed him for now but he will go outside in spring.  The species laughs at winters here but it took me so long to find one that after the incident I am taking extra precautions.

Ah, just a baby doing normal baby dog things! I was unaware you are an artist in clay. Words, yes; palms, yes -- what other hidden talents does la Peachy have? 🤔
