Fertilizer Mistake!

Hi All,

I accidently grabbed the wrong fertilizer bag when fertilizing my Adonidia (Christmas) palm trees here in Southern Florida. I sprinkled a few handfuls of my Expert Gardener all purpose plant food 12-5-7 on my palms prior to realizing it wasn't the correct one. I then applied a couple of handfuls of my Sunniland palm fertilizer 6-1-8, which is what I normally use on my palms, to try to remedy the situation. I just applied both types today.  Do I need to scrape the fertilizer off of the dirt surrounding my palms, or do you think they'll be ok. I only lightly watered them so far after the fertilizer and did not rake it into the soil.

If I personally did this, I’d probably attempt to scrape off as much of the incorrect fertilizer as I could and apply the normal type just to ease the mind from worry. 
 

That being said…….i don’t think it will matter much. A lot of people use generic plant fertilizer in their entire garden instead of using palm specific.

@Fruitcup probably no harm, no foul.  The only stuff that might be "bad" are fast release turf fertilizers.  Those have a lot of quick dissolving nitrogen that can easily burn palm roots.  A quick search on the 12-5-7 looks like it is polymer coated, so it should be totally fine.

Optimal ratios are approx 3:1:2. But it really isn't that important. We baby the plants too much. They'll be fine.

Plants can't read... They will be happy with almost any fertilizer applied in the correct amount.
