I had two planted, lost one but this one has been a tank.  Genetics are from a local DFW parent that has been here for over 30 years.

Agreed!! Interestingly enough I planted a 5 gallon at the same time as this one (which was maybe liner size) last spring.  I thought for sure the larger one would make it…..

surprisingly….. not the case!  This one is about to eclipse my height here soon… so it will be over 6’ soon!

crazy how fast this one has grown.

I'm working a realtime post(multi year) kind of demonstrating what you describe.  Suffice to say, I recommend seeding directly in place when possible.  I'll leave it at that.

About filifera, I believe root and establishment of such are key.  I think this is what you have personally witnessed.  

Years of growth are literally lost using a pot.

Enjoy your filifera, they are fun and amazing!

I've been saying this for many years, bantering it back and forth with @teddytn...  Both of us firmly believe getting these started (by these I mean Sabals and Washingtonia as well) as EARLY as you can is your best key to success.  The larger one I transplanted needed a soft winter for its roots to get large enough to handle winter.  The smaller one which is now flourishing didn't have a need for a large deep root system, did well over the winter even though bitter cold, and now is really spreading out.  I'm surprised everyday walking out there and it's nearly above my head.  We still have a LOT of growing season to go and I just cleaned the circle around this filifera, fertilized heavily, and mulched.. I give it water every few days so it will grow, grow, and grow here.

Probably also helps that we had nearly 50" of rain this calendar year.... :)

I planted one that exhibits many traits of filifera. It's a crap shoot in my climate and will need a winter canopy. It's in it's third year from seed and stands 20" tall. Planted 10 days ago and it's pushed out 2 new fronds.

Updated.  Still cranking out growth and loving our heat….. showing zero signs of robusta.
