Saving a CIDP

I was given a CIDP about a month ago. It's about 3' tall, a couple dead/dying fronds. It was very root bound. They didn't want it when it was given to them and they never once watered it or cared for it at all. When I got it the soil was so dry that it shook around in the pot like a stone. I've since reported it into what I now think might be too big of a pot? Hoping I can save it and get a nice big plant for years to come. I do have some purple heart that broke and I placed a long the edges as qell

Well luckily CIDPs are tolerant of a wide variety of conditions and are pretty hard to kill, I suppose you can give it some water.

I have been watering it quite a bit, but I pulled back worrying I might cause root rot.

The pot is too big. What's in the soil mix - it looks black and mucky. Mucky soil promotes root rot.

It's just outdoor potting mix. It dries out pretty well. I had a a sago palm in it, but my puppies got it. This is now fenced off and safe. The pot origally had no holes, so I added drainage holes when I got it.

Description of this CIDP reads like the typical Walmart plant after a week in its garden shoppe.

That's about it. I added the same potting mix it was in. I'm considering just cleaning out the roots or trimming them like I've seen in some videos for them. But it's not getting worse yet that I can tell
