Copernicia culinaria

So,  Copernicia baileysnas are famous for not fruiting in South Florida.

However, one of the ones I planted 20 years ago has fruited this year for the first time and the fruits  are the size of grapes and dark purple.

They started dropping on the driveway and looked smooshie to me. So I dared to bite into one and was delighted by how sweet the pulp is. The texture is somewhat grainy. I would say that it tastes like figs. I cannot imagine a regular songbird swallowing one and dispersing them. But I have heard of ancient tortoises in the Caribbean islands having that role.

Or maybe bats.

Yet, now that I have enjoyed eating a few, I can just imagine that aboriginal people might have dispersed the seeds as well.
