Palm Update #2: Majesty Update + My other Pygmy

Earlier this month I had posted about my Majesty palm and how it was developing spots. I have new photos of all of my palms and one I have never shown. IMG_8659.thumb.jpeg.7144ff10f2d6a69beacd4aa20cc7801a.jpeg

as for the Majesty it looks the same to me. This is the only frond with this kind of spots. I’ll leave it up to all of you whether or not I should prune it.

If it's any consolation, I have new neighbors that decided they like palms. They planted two Majesties, one on each side of the driveway in the front yard. I haven't told them that they'll be burnt to a crisp by Labor Day, sited in 14 hours of summer sun and 95° temps. The upside is, that they won't be emotionally attached to the plants when our winter minimums turn them to mush.

Don't prune a good leaf over a couple brown spots. Even if the entire leaf was like that, it's best to leave them on for the palm to absorb nutrients from unless the palm is thriving so much that you can make the aesthetic choice of removing leaves.

I imagine it's been almost as hot in Pittsburgh as it's been in Baltimore the past two weeks. Normal for palms to feel the heat a bit. The next few days are really needed for us here as it's been so hot the last two weeks and no good rain at all.

I can't tell if it's just the sunlight and your phone camera or not, but are the majesty's leaves yellowish or just a light green? It might be helpful to give it a tiny bit less direct sun on the hottest days. Soil beneath it looks wet in that last picture. Has it been in that same pot since last year? If you haven't given it any food this season, might be a good idea. Palm gain is the only plant food I can find that has plenty of magnesium, manganese, iron, and some other nutrients that nitrogen-focused plant foods don't have. Remember, the warmer the soil the faster the plant's metabolism (until it gets so hot that the plant, like an animal, just keels over) so it may be hungry. Slight sunburn is my first guess though, unless you haven't fed it in that pot this year

Interesting. This is the 2nd summer I have had this guy so I guess I’m either lucky or somewhat knowledgeable.

So long as you're careful with the amount of sun at the beginning of the season, they should be OK.
