A local nursery near me which is pretty well much all there is in the way of a large commercial nursery had a nice selection of healthy palms for sale most likely grown in tropical Queensland in spring I will contact the owner and see if he wants a few happypalms with something a little more exotic in store for them but I certainly would love to getting the prices he has on his palms that’s for sure.

Very nice selection of sizable specimens. Some folks don’t want to wait 10 years so they will purchase large palms for immediate gratification. I buy small sizes and wait unless they are on sale or something. The prices I could see seem reasonable. Harry

Hence the price they don’t want to wait so they have to pay the big bucks that’s what palms a really worth.

Those prices may be higher than the OC's. I've been spoiled by Florida prices.

Thanks for taking me to the nursery virtually cos due to a big car service bill all plant purchases have been suspended in July 😅 . Somehow reading your post and seeing the photos made me feel I was also at the nursery.

It’s always fun wondering around looking at the plants winter ha# put a hold on my plant buying mail order from tropical Queensland even the suppliers have stopped during winter there are few sellers but if you buy anything bare rooted it’s not  an ideal time to pot up.

We had our deck done a few years ago . The crew that Jack hammered the old deck moved a huge pot with my black bamboo into a dirt are beside my Arenga Engleri . It had been sitting there until a couple of months ago when I finally got the strength ( with my wife’s help) to pull it up onto the deck and I cleaned it up with new soil. That left an empty spot so I always wanted a King Palm there . I bought a 3 gallon 5’ Archontophoenix C. double for $35 on sale at a hardware store. It was wobbly in the pot but I thought it was a great price and it is doing OK. For mature or larger palms at a nursery that has a variety of palms , those prices that you posted are what they ask. I have bought smaller ones there but I can’t put $500- $600 down for a plant . I would rather visit private growers. Harry

I understand what it takes and the years involved in growing palms to that size at PACSOA annual plant sale there was a very large geonoma atrovirens for $650 aus dollars I kick myself for not buying it a true collector palm and a very large one oh well next visit to the show I will take a few more dollars I prefer to grow my palms from seed it is just more satisfying for me I always look for a bargain but the palms in my area are just the common ones which I already have I just cannot do commercial nursery prices I prefer private growers or the markets.

Wow I had never seen a Geonoma photo before and it is stunning indeed. I wouldn't have bought it either though, I try not to overspend and enjoy what I already have nowadays.

I hope one day I can make it to Australia (I hate flying) and perhaps see your collection. I bet it is stunning.

I just don't have the ready cash available for the expensive stuff these days and the few times I did shell out big time the palms croaked on me. No palm, no money and no joy either.  If I had saved up all that lost money instead of wasting it, I could have had a face lift and a bit of other work done then married a billionaire who could afford to buy me all the expensive palms I laid eyes on.  I not buying anything at the moment,  these cold winter days are too brutal and all my money is going to help my vet make payments on her BMW.

I have come to the place where I believe some palms are better bought larger, and some are such fast growers once planted in the ground, its better to buy them small.  A alexandre and bismarckia are so fast for me it makes no sense to buy big.  But there are cases where the palm may be slow or it is a bit cold sensitive when small or you are trying to establish canopy in an empty yard, so a larger size makes sense.   I have an A Alexandre triple that cost $3 each and they were 20' tall in 5 years.  Same for bismarckia, very fast palm for me.  I have spent a little as $3 for a palm and as much as $1800 plus a bobcat rental for a larger palm.  Today everything is more expensive it seems, the dollar isnt worth much today.  I just hope the small specialty palm growers survive as they offer so many choices not seen in the general nurseries or box stores.

Formerly in Gilbert AZ, zone 9a/9b. Now in Palmetto, Florida Zone 9b/10a??
