Hi Members,

I think this is my official first post here. I joined a month ago and spent many hours learning about palms! I live in Concord CA, zone 9b. It doesn't get below 30 here (rarely) and we get a few weeks over 100 in the summer. I am looking for a sun grown kentia palm to plant in semi shady area, possibly full sun. Although we get heat here, at night almost always the temperature goes to low 60 or high 50es. Do you know anyone in the Bay Area sells sun grown Kentias? Or if in SoCal, can they ship to Bay Area?

Thank you everyone and Happy Summer :)

Welcome to Palmtalk!  You would have better success posting this in the "Palms/Plants Wanted" forum.  You might want to contact members @Ben in Norcal and @Darold Petty who are in your area.  Recently I saw this ad of a grower in Ventura County selling Howea but I don't think he ships.  Good luck!

Howea are totally hardy here, as you note, but will never be a full sun palm.  I have had them in ground 10 years now, and they can never handle full sun and 110 degree highs for days on end.  They'll live, but look like ass.  In shade they do great.

Thanks Ben. That's what I thought too, they will not handle full sun here. The heat waves we are having this year are unbelievable. I have a good space in the front yard and maybe I can plant some trees to shade the Howea. Will see :)

Hi,

We have 3g and 7g H. Forsteriana. They have been under 50% shade tho in our shade house. Some get more sun than others because they are closer to where you enter. I am in Florida, but certified to ship to CA. If you still are interested give me a call/text (239) 318-0460

Thanks,

Shelby

Hi Mo -

Following advice from Mr. Jim Denz,

I ordered some huge 15G Kentia from Lowes in the past. They were ~$150 at the time and more than six feet tall. Doubt they were sun grown but like others have said, they aren't gonna look good unless you permanently give em some shade.

Thank you Ed! I bought many already, mostly shade growing trees. I am acclimating them now. The ones in full shade, they are receiving filtered sun but at least they are outside in the patio. This process will takes a year for shade growing trees. For the green house grown kentias they are already now in full sun inland (still in pot).  I am still looking for ones with formed trunks. Just to complete my test to see if they are stronger than the small ones for full sun inland.

Best,

Mo
