New windmill palm. Sun grown?

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to share this new windmill palm that I planted. It was a 30 gallon that I got from a local nursery. The pot was packed full of roots so it already has a healthy system. Trunk is about 2.5’ and thick. Short fronds and light color. Been in ground about a month in 4 hours of sun each day is all it will get. So far middle frondIMG_9424.thumb.jpeg.6f494ca023ce780f40967a0003e1f942.jpeg is growing out. Will be interesting to see what sun grown trachy does in partial sun. So far seems happy.

Palms of Victory I shall wear

Cape Coral (It's Just Paradise)

Zone 10A on the Isabelle Canal
Elevation: 15 feet

I'd like to be under the sea in an octopus' garden in the shade.

It'll almost certainly grow longer petioles. Full shade produces rather elongated petioles creating a very open crown. Your new palm will appreciate outgrowing it's close fencing confines.

@Las Palmas Norte yeah when I planted it I knew it was little close to the fence but due to the small crown I thought it was ok for the time being. I’ve seen them planted very close to houses where the fronds are brushing the house. Once it grows up over the fence it will be in the clear. It will get about 4 hours of full west Texas sun and some dappled light in the morning. One month in it looks good and the middle frond is growing out pretty quickly. On the opposite end I planted a similar sized shade grown trachy 2 months ago in a spot that gets 8 hours of west Texas sun. It is not faring so well. I think it will live but it will probably take another year to look decent. It is very sunburnt.

I have 2 planted in a pretty shady part of my yard and the petioles on them are quite a bit longer than my others that are more sun exposed. Here's a couple of pics

@DAVEinMB those are nice. It’s interesting that those old petioles at the bottom are still on there. What zone are you in?

Thanks, yea they seem to be happy. I'm really surprised it's holding onto old fronds as long as it has been. I'm in zone 8b on the SC coast

Considering that condensing unit most likely blows air well above 110 all summer, probably says a bit about trachies "true" heat tolerance!image.thumb.png.4378c156a4195dea45068307881fd682.png

Very nice palms for a variety of different gardens. Sun tolerant , shade tolerant , takes cold and heat , I have seen them in places I wouldn’t expect. Harry

@Harry’s Palms I agree. Although I planted one other trachy earlier this year that was a greenhouse or shade grown plant as it looked very similar to Dave’s although much smaller. I planted it directly in the ground where it sees 8-9 hours of west Texas sun. It has suffered big time. I don’t think it’s going to look good until all the old fronds die and are cut off and the new ones acclimate to the high sun conditions. It may take a year.

Full sun changes the look all together. Mine has been in full sun since it was young . I planted it on a south facing slope when it was quite small . The older fronds show a bit of stress but the palm keeps on going . I can’t remember how long it’s been there , but at least 5-6 years. My climate is probably not quite as harsh as yours. @Harry’s Palms your soil looks similar to ours by appearance! What zone are you in? Although the sun and heat in the summer can be harsher in areas that are in the same zone. That tree looks great!

Thank you! My zone is listed as being on the border of 9b and 10a . My house , as you can see , is on a hill so I am a solid 10a here . I have seen a bit of frost on the north side of the house , mainly on my car , maybe two or three times in 27 years. The soil is very rocky and we amend around the garden at least 2-3 times a year. We do get heat waves but typical summer days are low to mid eighties and low sixties at night. Harry

@Harry’s Palms that sounds perfect. In the summer here it is 95-105 regularly. 75-80 at night. We are also at 2500’ elevation which brings the sun exposure up even more.
