Part of our move toward the future must involve preserving our past.  As such, preserving and centralizing access to as many of our publications as possible is a priority.  We are currently attempting to collect as many of our publications as possible.  Primarily, this centers around back issues of  The Palmateer, but could also include publications that were not published in our aforementioned quarterly or exist only as paper documents.  Many of our former board members, current members, and past meeting attendees are active on the PalmTalk forums or on Facebook.  Effectively, this is an all call for assistance.

If you have any of the following, please post them here, send them to cfpacs.membership@gmail.com, or PM us here on PalmTalk.

  • Issues of The Palmateer and/or CFPACS News prior to 2013.
  • Articles, pictures, videos from CFPACS meetings that you would like preserved.
  • Anything else you would like to share.

Feel free to respond with any questions, comments, or concerns.

I have paper issues dating back to 1997.  Someone would have to unstaple all of those and scan them to PDF files.  It's a daunting task but worthwhile as mentioned.

I'm spearheading the operation currently.  I have a few sets of documents on the way that will need scanned.  Once I finish with those, I'll follow up with you and add anything missing.  It's better for me to do a set or two at a time so I don't end up hoarding documents for a year.

There are also some folks who have electronic copies (PDFs) of some of the content that have been given access to a Google drive to upload directly.  If anyone else has electronic copies, or is willing to make them, and would like access, you can:

  • email the membership account (cfpacs.membership@gmail.com), or
  • PM me or the Membership PalmTalk account, or
  • or post here

and we'll get you set up.

The first reclaimed issue of The Palmateer, 2011 Spring Issue from right after the 2010 cold snaps in January and December:

As you can see, we didn't cheap out on the dpi nor did we go black and white - full color like the original.  More to come as time permits.  @SubTropicRay, we'll be in touch once we do a full inventory of what we have.  Thank you to everyone who has contacted us so far.

Progress Update:

Currently, we've collected either the original PDF documents or scanned copies of the vast bulk of the back issues of The Palmateer.  Thank you to @Bob Johnson for your assistance with the PDFs thus far.

When possible, we will use the original PDF as the scanned copies can sometimes skew, bleed through from the back of the page, or have markings from the original owners.  We have original PDF copies of all issues from 1999-2004, 2013-2023.  We have scanned copies of most of the other issues from 2005-2011, with a few isolated original PDFs in the mix.

The notable holes in the collection include the entire year of 2012, the 2nd quarter (summer) issue in 2009, and almost everything pre-1999.  You can track the progress here:

@SubTropicRay You should receive an email from the membership account with a few questions about the back issues you have.

First Update Ready:

This update encompasses all of the work mentioned above.  The amount of progress made in 3 short weeks is staggering.  Big thanks to Mike Merritt, @Bob Johnson, and Don Agnello for their assistance to get to this point.

@Central Floridave In regard to the question: What year did CFPACS help plant some royal palms there?

I didn't see anything on a quick scan through a few Palmateers that recapped meetings there, but it may be in one of the other issues.  It might also have taken place in 2012 wheN there are no issues published.

Mike Dahme gave an account of an expedition to the area of the St. Johns where Bartram reported Royals: "a small band of CFPSers set forth on a pontoon rental on a fine, pre-Hurricane Floyd, September morning.  ... The following morning, somewhere in the mile-long stretch between Manhattan and the lake is where he sighted the Royals, and it is in that stretch that we planted about 40 palms, mostly Florida Royals (and a smattering of hardier species, Livistona saribus and Arenga pinata), but also, for no reason other than availability, three Puerto Rican Royals (R. borinquena). The Palmateer, December, 1999, page 10. See attachment.

It would be interesting to see if anything from this planting has survived!

@Bob Johnson I took a look at the area described in the article through Google Maps.  The resolution on some of the screens isn't that great, especially the water route in the big red box, but I didn't see anything that looked like it could be a ~25 year old Roystonea.  That doesn't mean that they aren't there, or that some of the others didn't survive, but I just can't make them out from the available footage.

There are some views that might be valuable to the north in the actual town of Astor, but I didn't notice anything there either.

@RiverCityRichard + @Fishinsteeg234 If you or anyone else ever fishes in this area, keep your eyes open for these potential finds.

Fished up there a few times and haven’t seen any. There is a decent microclimate in the areas directly near the water. If I end up doing any tournaments up there this year I’ll keep an eye out

It was a 2009 joint meeting with the South Florida Palm Club.

We recently updated the section of our website where The Palmateer was published to become a repository for our publications:

https://cfpacs.com/org/palmateer/

The back issues are available there, with no password required.  More updates are on the way.

A generous donor provided us with copies of the Central Florida Palm Bulletin (the precursor of The Palmateer) from 1990-1993.  We had the January 1991 issue from @mike in kurtistown that had two pages missing.  We were able to recover those pages.  The publications for 1990-1993 are now uploaded and the links have been tested, so you have some additional holiday reading if you want it.

NOTE: Since these issues came after the 1989 Christmas Freeze, there are tons of observations that are not currently included in the Cold Hardiness Master Data - and from some unexpected locations.  The Summer 1990 issue (actually from April) has the bulk of the observations.
