UPDATE

Due to damage from Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, our Sarasota site cannot host.  We will be changing the itinerary for this meeting.  The board is currently in the process of finalizing the details for the new location.  We will communicate the details of the meeting as soon as we confirm them.  Thank you for understanding!

We were looking at multiple sites for this meeting.  There is supposed to be some news coming soon, but right now it looks like this meeting will be moved to the Orlando area.  Nothing has been confirmed yet, but the board has been working to nail down the itinerary.

Our original plan to have the meeting in Sarasota was effectively canceled by Hurricane Milton.  After many attempts to reschedule the meeting in the Orlando area, we could not lock up a location that could host our meeting on short notice.  As a result, we have officially moved the meeting to St. Johns Botanical Garden in Hastings, FL.

Location:

St. Johns Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve

8310 County Road 13 S
Hastings, FL 32145-5732

About the garden: This garden started as a private collection and recently celebrated its one-year anniversary as a botanical garden.  In addition to pushing the cold hardiness envelope for a location this far north with species like Veitchia arecina and Archontophoenix purpurea, this garden pushes the “it won’t grow in Florida” envelope with Dypsis decipiens and several species of Rhopalostylis.

Schedule:

Saturday, December 7th, 2024

  •  10:00 AM: Meeting Starts, Tour Begins
  • 12:00 Noon: BBQ Lunch
  • 2:00 PM: Auction and Vendor Sale
  • 3:00 PM Adjourn

Please Bring:

  • A chair
  • A side dish to share
  • An auction plant

Please RSVP by replying to the email that was sent or sending a PM here in order to ensure we order enough BBQ for everyone.  Please also accept our apologies for the short notice.

Those headed to the meeting this coming Saturday will probably want to bring two sets of clothes.  The overnight low for Friday night is predicted to be in the low 40s.  The high is predicted to reach 70F, but the start of the meeting could feel quite chilly.  For me, this means shorts and a t-shirt under a hoodie and sweats.

Another thing to be aware of is that this garden will likely see 3-4 nights in the 30s plus have frost in the open areas.  If you want to see how a few of the questionable plants handle it, the meeting might be a good spot to see first-hand.  Most of the garden has canopy, but there are still some open, flat areas that can collect frost.

There is a small airport close by that will give ballpark numbers for what is actually recorded vs. what is predicted:

Dr. Rossi, our host for the meeting, asked us to share this with potential attendees:

There have been a lot of changes since we last visited. There are over 400 species of palms!  Some of the highlights include:

  • A healthy 4 year old Dypsis decipiens (Manambe Palm)
  • A 3/4 Jubaea chilensis
  • 4 species of Rhopalostylis (Shaving Brush palms)

...and many many other strange species surviving up in the North.

For Christmas light fans, the "Nights of Lights" in nearby St. Augustine.
