Does anyone want to do a palm seed exchange meet up in Orlando?

Recommended Posts

I live in Orlando and have collected a lot of seeds from different palms. Butia, medjool, Chinese fan - a ton of different species.

I was thinking we could do a seedling / seed exchange if possible.

Could give you a red latan seedling? What other seeds you got tho?

Depending on where and when, I might be interested in making the trip over.  I'd have to check the inventory, but I might be able to get some different seeds that haven't been mentioned just yet.

It would have to be something really special for me to be interested.  I'm just about out of room in my yard.  My wife is already complaining about the size of my Becarriophoenix alfredi.  So, let me know where/when and what might be involved.  Thanks for thinking of me.

I have no seeds, but lots of seedlings. I’m game however!

Possibly interested.  I have no seed, but a handful of excess seedlings up to 1g or so.

@orlandozone9b If you're serious, the people have spoken :)

Name some dates, times, and places, and see if anything works for the bulk of the attendees.

Don't worry too much about me.  My schedule is a wreck until Christmas.

For me, the week from September 15th-22nd is a no-go - way too much going on that week.  October 25th through the 27th is the CFPACS Fall Meeting, so I'll probably be in Miami at least part of that weekend.  There is supposed to be a celebration at St. Johns Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve sometime in October and the USF Plant Sale is October 12th and 13th.

Either way, I'll make sure any seeds or seedlings I can conjure up make it there for all of you.

Interested. What are you looking for? What does everyone have?

Probably the two most important questions if this actually happens:

Easy part first: What am I looking for?  Nothing.  Yard is packed full like @ck_in_fla.

Have right now:

  • Medemia argun (seedlings in limited supply)
  • Hyphaene coriacea (seeds)
  • Washintonia filifera (1 lot of sprouts)
  • Phoenix reclinata hybrid seeds
  • Phoenix roebelenii seeds (possibly hybridized)

What can I likely bring in addition - might be ready, might not:

  • Archontophoenix (cunninhamiana, alexandrae)
  • Ptychosperma elegans (limited amount)
  • Chrysalidocarpus (decaryi, leptocheilos, lutescens)
  • Sabal minor
  • Dictyosperma album 'conjugatum'
  • Sea grapes: Coccoloba uvifera

Usually fruit later in the year:

  • Livistona chinensis, decora, saribus
  • Syagrus schizophyla
  • Thrinax radiata
  • Pseudophoenix sargentii
  • Acoelorraphe wrightii
  • Adonidia merrillii
  • Arenga englerii
  • Sabal domingensis
  • Sabal mauritiiformis
  • Sabal causiarum
  • Bismarckia nobilis (silver)
  • Caryota mitis
  • Butia odorata

I'd echo @kinzyjr and @ck_in_fla, my yard is pretty much full.  I'm starting to "edit out" some more common things in favor of more interesting palms and cycads.  There are a few smaller palms that I have been considering, and maybe some "undergrowth" types.  Of interest to me are currently:

  • Chamaedorea Radicalis
  • Burretiokentia Dumasii or Hapala
  • Licuala Distans
  • Licuala Ramsayii
  • Ptychosperma Elegans
  • Carpentaria Acuminata
  • Anything Dioon, Ceratozamia, Encephalartos, or Zamia

I have some seedlings that I overbought and have no space for them.  This is an "unconfirmed list," i.e. stuff that I have on my spreadsheet but I haven't physically located to know it is still alive!

  • Areca Triandra (1)
  • Beccariophoenix Alfredii (7?)
  • Caryota Gigas/Obtusa (2)
  • Sabal Mexicana (1)
  • Pinanga Coronata Kuhlii (1)
  • Cycas Taitungensis (3) - now merged with Revoluta

I can also lop off a culm or two from a bunch of different bamboos, if anyone wants to try a species or two. I have:

  • Bambusa: Boniopsis,Cerosissima, Contracta, Doli Blue, Doli Silverstripe, Eutuldoides Basistriata, Glaucophylla Green, "Kenilworth," Multiplex Alphonse Karr, Multiplex Fernleaf, Multiplex Rosa, Nana (xThrysocalamus Liang), New Guinea Black, Suberecta "Jesse Durko," Subtruncata, Textilis Albostriata, Textilis Gracilis, Textilis RG Dwarf, Textilis Vietnam, Tuldoides "Swollen Internode," Wamin, Wamin Striata
  • Dendrocalamopsis Variostriata
  • Dendrocalamus: Latiflorus, Maroochy, Maximuslamina
  • Gigantochloa: Luteostriata #4447, Malaysian Black
  • Thyanolaena Maxima - Tiger Grass

Could maybe add this to the CFPACS meetings as well...

Like many on here I don't have much need for anything. There’s always room for one more of course 😃 but I’m not in search of anything at the moment.
Seeds
I have a couple hundred Ptychosperma elegans seeds lying in the planter right now and may have a pile Pseudophoenix sargentii in another couple of weeks.

Seedlings

I have a bunch of Livistona decora and Thrinax radiata. I also have some smaller amounts of a bunch of other stuff that I’ll need to do something with pretty soon.

I don’t have much to exchange other than some cunninghamiana seedlings. Would be fun to meet some of you though!
