Summer recoveries.

Post any of your palms that have made winter damage recoveries this summer.

A substantial spear pull including a fully developed frond, was cause for concern this early spring. I think I used a bit of H2O2 but no follow up or aftercare. Some time later I noticed an emergence of growth and since then nearly a full crown of new fronds has given this palm new life. It's a Home Depot palm and almost certainly not grown locally. Often these need a year or two to acclimate to new surroundings and environmental changes. I should have provided at least an over head canopy during the initial phase while establishing this palm. Now that it's recovered, I'll do that for the upcoming winter season in hopes of retaining the look and health during the development & establishment period.

Here you go.  -6F close to house on my gauge but officially -11F. Unprotected palms except 8" snow cover.

Edit the palmetto was protected but spear pulled late and lost all but one frond.

My Robusta had a partial spear pull ( wet cold 18F , was completed covered in ice)I lost two Queens.  My Filiferas only had minor damage on the spear. The Robusta completed defoliated,  bounced back right away.  I have to mention all my palms weren't dormant since I fertilized them 2 month prior to the freeze , they also got a lot of water.  Next time I'll make sure they go dormant early enough.

Both of my Queens and my Bizzy have recovered well from 18F.

All three were protected to some extent. Bizzy was fully covered, however it was so windy that the lights were knocked to the ground, so the fronds were not heated. The Queens had their trunks and growth points wrapped, fronds left exposed as they are way too big to cover.

Here is the first Queen (front yard):

Here are 2 lytocaryum hoehnei that are rebounding from this past winter. Can't remember the ultimate low but they took on a lot of cold rain. The one against the house spear pulled and didn't show signs of life until July

How much protection did you offer these lovelies during the cold?

Posted

@tarnadoI wrapped them with mini incandescent xmas lights/rope lights, and covered them with frost cloth whenever the temp is under 25F or lower.
