We have a mature palm tree in N. CA that until recently had the old leaf bases/boots around the entire trunk intact. Recently, squirrels have invaded the tree and seem to continue knocking the upper “boots” off the tree to create high ledges for nests, which has created an unsightly mess.

I think we now need to skin all the old “boots” off the tree to prevent rodents from nesting in and damaging the tree.

i have received conflicting opinions from local tree care providers about whether and how to do this (possibly using saw to trim boots vs. removing by hand, etc.).

I am interested in opinions and info. about this.

Also, I’m wondering what type of palm tree we have (pics attached showing current condition of tree).

Thanks for any guidance.

John, You have a Phoenix canariensis (Canary Island Date Palm. Thee are reputable tree care companies that can power saw off all the old leaf bases without harm to the tree.

Yep , either leave as is or get a pro. Be sure to get recommendations from previous customers. That is a beautiful palm and it would be a shame to have it ruined. Harry
