I take it  mejiae is long term hardy in Jacksonville? I had heard they were as tender as spinulosum.

I read a few years ago that Spinulosum is only hardy to ~28F.  My big trunking one took ~24.4F with heavy frost and only had some relatively minor leaf burn.  The other 7 Spinulosum were also only lightly damaged.  Mejiae took more leaf burn and were under some Alfredii canopy, but were totally fine.  I doubt they are lower-20s hardy, but I'd think >25F should be fine with canopy.

I had thought Jacksonville was pretty cold, but looking back it has been mild since 2004, with a couple years hitting 24-25°F. Prior to that it has had some cold temperatures in 80’s, including 9°F in 1985.

I planted this cycad out in mid 90s--- for the first few years it was always defoliated or burnt ---I covered it as best I could -----its been through deep freezes of 20°F or so .    Gradually seemed to get tougher been through bad freezes of 96',2001', and 2010'.
