Good for you! Welcome to PalmTalk.

I was into palms/plants already when I was 5 years old, but now I'm 41 so, not a kid you could chat with on this topic, which is what you're looking for. I'm sure there are kids your age interested in palms. I've seen a number of 'planty' people claim they first showed interest for plants already at a very young age. It might not be a common interest for kids, but there definitely are youth who have an interest for it. I hope you find someone your age to share with on this topic.

I was into plants at age 6. I’d go into the nearby woods, when living in Illinois, and dig up tree saplings and transplant them in our yard. Some made it, some didn’t. When we moved back to California, at age 9, palm trees became a favorite. At 11, I bought my first. Just a common one gallon Washingtonia but I was overjoyed. When kids came to my palm “loaded” garden on Halloween last month, most remarked about the palms. Two said it reminded them of DisneyWorld, Orlando. Others, Hawaii. One girl said “Please never move away.” She was concerned that the garden might not be preserved apparently. I think lots of kids love palm trees today. Probably even more than when I was a kid.

Welcome! I became obsessed with palms right around that age.  I couldn't get my hands on enough material.

Corpus Christi, TX, near salt water, zone 9b/10a! Except when it isn't and everything gets nuked.

One of my sons who is 5 also does this.  Nothing he's transplanted so far has lived, but he's getting there.  Another of my children - one of my daughters, who is 9, is currently trying to root some Alocasia pups.  My oldest daughter, who is 15, doesn't care much for palms but does have a garden full of pepper starts.  Multiple ways to skin a cat, but being into plants is definitely a kid thing.  It's probably just kind of hard for kids to connect on this subject.

When I was little, I took an apple seed and grew a seedling apple tree. I over watered it and it died, but the excitement about plants did not end there. In the early days of the internet I was looking up all different types of palm trees and writing down the ones I liked the look of and wanted to someday grow in my home garden. The first palms I ever sprouted when I was between 12 - 14 years old were Mexican fan palms and 2 of those palms are now planted at my home that I moved into in 2019.

I'm not sure how many young palm talkers are out there currently, but we all started young. I'm in my mid 30s now.

I first showed an interest in palms when my family went on vacation to Fort Walton Beach, FL in 2014. I was 8 at the time.

My parents decided to bring home 2 Queen palms in late 2019 (I was 13 at the time, and this is when I joined this forum), and that is what ignited my love for palms. Taking care of these palms in their early stages made me explore other palms. In 2020 when COVID started, I had picked up some Sabal palmetto seeds at Pensacola Beach, FL, and my first ever seed grown palm was brought into the world in summer of 2020. I am now 18 and my palm collection is up to 41 palms, some being in ground and some in pots. If your parents allow, you can also have a container ranch of palms, or grow palms in the ground if your climate supports it.

Funny enough, I spent my first ever paycheck from my first job on palms lol

Welcome! There are tons of people here that started young, me included just not with palms. Plants are my people but as soon as a saw how varied palms are and the need to conserve them i was hooked.  I'm not a kid now but like many on here said a lot of us started young so ask around in the real world too (if you can) and see who is waiting to share plants with you.  If not we can always give advice on them here, and the old threads are great to read! This place is a safe space really so have fun!

I joined this forum when I was 13, well after my obsession with palms started. The best thing about starting young is being able to grow from seed and enjoy the results even for slow growing species. No better time than the present to start growing, regardless of age.

I am a late bloomer, didn't appreciate palms until, at age 19,  I left northern California to attend UC Santa Barbara.  I was stunned to see Howea forsteriana as a landscape plant.   My freshman year romance really clicked after an evening walk around the Santa Barbara courthouse !
