Hey guys 👋

I’ve been dying to find a highly variegated Musa basjoo for sale but I can’t find one anywhere! Does anyone have one they’d be willing to sell? Or does anyone know of a site to buy them from? Again, the key is high variegation so there’s less chance of it losing the variegation over time! 😊 I’m such a sucker for variegated plants, darn it!!

thanks for taking the time,

Max 🙂

Hi Max,

Try Orange Lake Nursery in Florida. I bought the variegated and pink variegated from them. They were tissue culture and up to 4” pot.
These have grown pretty good for me. I have 3 more smaller ones, running behind these larger ones.

www.orangelakenursery.com

i have bought a decent amount of orders from them, quite a few philodendron varieties. Very good shipping practices, only pet peeve is no labels on all plants. But other than that, great nursery to mail order from!

@Barry those aren't Musa basjoo though.  These are tender bananas, albeit beautiful and and have no chance of making it in Michigan.

Personally i have never seen or heard of variegated Musa basjoo.  I had to look it up and see a couple of sellers with photos which seem to be a slight green variegation, but no longer for sale.  I wouldn't be surprised if the ones they sold turned out to be solid green as adults.

I got lucky and found a variegated basjoo at a Lowes a few summers back, but it couldn't handle the sun and heat.  but then in the shade it couldn't grow fast enough to replace leaves so eventually died

Thanks for sharing that. Those are gorgeous. I’ll actually have a variegated Musa ae ae and a variegated pink banana just like yours but much smaller and not as beautiful 🤩 I’m growing them indoors at 60% humidity. They came as tiny tissue culture plants in a tiny cup the size of a shot glass. Now just a few months later they’re in 2 gallon pots and they’re close to a foot tall. Yours have a very nice variegation. I hope mine end up looking like yours soon!

Good point that those variegated ones might revert to full green anyways

That’s such a tragic story 😢 Sorry about that. I can see how that could happen to anyone 😭
