I have 125 palm species in my garden and they produce a lot of debris, mostly dead leaves, but also inflorescences and/or infructescences, to the point disposal becomes a big job. But a labor of love!

So how do our various loco compadres handle palm trash?image.thumb.jpg.0f0a1b3bdde41b1c1e1dbe0669150e6c.jpg

I do not have that volume of palm trash, but I use the spent fronds as mulch/compost.

I lust for organic matter, anything to pile on top of lava.

I have three city supplied green cans that I use but they only get filled once or twice a month . The disposal company hauls them off. Any large debris goes to my shop where we have a few large dumpsters. I have no room for composting piles or bins. Harry

I don't have that much debris yet, but I do constantly prune and trim- i try my best to keep up with it. I'm considering a small chipper to break all that stuff down and make it more manageable.

This is a good option if it is legal in your area:

Oh yeah, there’s all kinds of fun you can have with palm parts. The best use is to scratch your pyromania itch; dried palm leaves make great kindling. They burn fast and hot for a short time, usually enough to ignite small dry wood, then larger pieces.

Do you shred them? If so, with what?

Fortunately I have space in the jungle for a couple of compost heaps and enough rain to help it break down in a reasonable amount of time.

In my tiny California garden, we have weekly green waste pickup service and the bin is rarely completely full.

I visited one large garden where huge pinnate fronds were stacked vertically to form low walls, sort of weaving the leaflets downward. I couldn't really recommend that practice. At least it did not appeal to me.

Burning yard waste is prohibited in both locations.

I just drop the spent leaves around the bases of trees or add them to berms. My palms are not very big yet, so I do not have any huge fronds. I will treat the larger, future fronds the same.

My county recycling yard will accept hardwood up to 36" in diameter, but refuses palm waste.
