I wonder if there are any bismarks on the barrier islands yet.  They may be just hardy enough to make it there outside a hurricane.

Never see it in NC, I want to try but i’m too scared to risk it.

But they are in the SC Lowcountry. Here’s one in Bluffton.

Nice! I ordered one with my floribunda order last time for expedience and it was pretty inexpensive. I wonder if the local gardening people (or palm society chapter) would go in for a bulk order of seedlings to experiment with, so the investment isnt so large if they fail.  They make a great contrast to the CIDP and other Phoenix palms of similar hardiness.

For the meantime, here’s HHI/Bluffton palms. I’ll add more to this later when I get on my computer lol

Haven't seen one along the coast. However, Palms R Kool on YouTube attempted to grow a Bismarck in the Charlotte area several years ago. It was a slow grower & performed poorly.

That Washingtonia had some serious damage (maybe cold?) to the original growth point and pushed out new growth out the side for some reason.  They're pretty tough buggers!

I'd say so. Especially when the ferry to Bear Island is in service. Ferry service was closed this year due to renovations on the island.

The trails are nice, but can be rather uncomfortable in the humid summer months; definitely something to check out in the cooler months of the year. There's also some great spots by the water to explore throughout the park.

Nice to see them doing some winter protection.  I lived in Havelock in the early 90's and remembered the palmettos in Morehead City looking perfect after winter while the Washingtonia looked pretty beat up every year.

I stayed at a rental on Hilton Head, SC that had a tall queen next to the building.

Chamaedorea radicalis and microspadix would do well into coastal NC.  I've had it overwinter a few years at my house in Virginia, as well as a jubaea x butia that is nearly trunking.

I almost bought it. I wondered if it was gonna continue to grow like this and create a double stemmed palm

I do think SC does a great job with planting palms. Palms are really common all over the midlands and coastal plain (I never been to the upstate) But the SC Lowcountry is the absolute best. Warmest climate and has the most variety.

Nice pics! Sadly, Phoenix roebelenii (Pygmy Date) is planted as an annual in North Carolina - our winter minimums are too harsh for these palms. Washingtonia performs much better & does best in southeastern N.C.
