Mixed box of RPS seeds debate Geonoma mooreana and dypsis confusa

A nice batch of rps seeds if I do say so myself. Bottom heating 30 degrees Celsius coco coir perlite mix and about 3 months time is all it took for this little science project to be a success. There is a debate thats always going on about imported seeds and everyone has his or her own opinion about what germinates and what doesn’t. Let’s just say if I harvest seeds from my garden knowing that they are fresh and export them to some far off destination halfway around the globe. And the grower germinating them gets nothing to germinate. It’s not the person who posted the seeds fault to there best of knowledge they where viable when harvested. The person sending them did the best they could to provide rare palm seeds with the thought of providing the best seeds they could. I have had batches of seeds that never germinated from imported seeds that’s growing for you. It’s no different than buying a stack of rare palms and having them die in your greenhouse or garden after you got them it’s not the seller’s fault. Like they say no one is twisting your arm to buy them!

Half true though! Phoenix seeds are known to germinate readily. If you buy blackish such seeds, those are very old and most probably spoiled. If seller keeps receiving reports about zero germination of seeds from a certain batch, how fair would be if he/she kept selling seeds from this batch till sold out? To name just two cases illuminating the dark side of the moon.

Konstantinos, I have to tell the truth, all the seeds I bought from RPS always sprouted, maybe I was very lucky? But I bought the seeds that were just released on sale, the new ones

I am not referring especially to rps. Although one germinated Phoenix seed out of 10 or two Livistona out of 10 is a rather disappointing quote, given the easiness of such seeds.  But definitely better than nothing! I had other companies in mind, which sold seeds to me and friends with zero germination! One in particular sold to me blackish Phoenix sylvestris seeds and so to a friend of mine. Those seeds had been bought wholesale from another company in another country (same advertiser, same pictures and same propagation instructions word by word translated). Guess what, none of the 40 Phoenix seeds germinated and all rotted. At same time I sowed seeds from consumed mazafati dates, stored in the fridge) and ended up with a forest of seedlings in the community pot, perhaps 100 or 99 % germination rate. Despite the best intentions, I can not overlook such discrepancies.

All the seeds I bought on eBay, at the beginning, before RPS, never germinated.

I have never bought seeds as I really don’t have anywhere to germinate even a few , except for my garden. If I’m given seeds , I just put the seed about 1/4-1/2” deep in the soil and wait . I treat them just like the seeds I harvest from my own palms. The seeds I have are mostly common Chamaedorea , Archontophoenix , Howea . When they are available , I give them away . Richard seems to have a good method for germinating , and really , that’s what it takes. The right soil or medium , bottom heat , and high level of knowledge of the palms he grows. Harry

It doesn’t worry me if they  germinate or not. At least I know iam getting the true varieties sent to me from rps  So many sellers just send common varieties knowing they are not the actual species. My wife just got sent tracky seeds purchasing licuala cordata as a Xmas gift for me.

Of course I have to agree with set priorities but bear in mind that seed from which following palm had been bought from rps.

Yes buyer beware on the internet that’s why I stick with known sellers of certain standards. Jack and the beanstalk he got in trouble for swapping the house cow and got some magic beans but he lucked up.

A method in the madness hey Harry but it works. Unfortunately I would not be game enough to try that with a batch of sabinara magnifica just poking them in the ground. On another note I did come first in science and agriculture in high school.
