Best protocol for dealing with Butia spear damage?

Recommended Posts

Was out of town for a bit and came home to significant spear on my butia odorata (a palm I knew was gonna get damaged from overestimating how cold it really was lol). I tugged on the spear and nothing pulled which I guess is a good sign, but the crown seems a bit loose. I poured some hydrogen peroxide down the spear just now, but is there anything else I should be doing to increase the chances of this palm surviving?

Thank you

Your overestimation, cold damaged your palm tree? What am I missing?

Some of the damage may not even be apparent until much later. I'd remove any obviously dead material and treat with H020. Shelter the center growth area from rain / frost to prevent any further damage.

By this I am referring to how it got colder than I anticipated. Sorry if I worded this confusingly.

So your underestimation of the cold temperatures...

Keep the palm sheltered & apply hydrogen peroxide once weekly until new growth emerges. If you want, you can also put a pen or pencil in the center & watch for upward motion.

Thank you. Seems like all I can do know is just wait and see what happens
