I know it's a little early but some of the stores by me are starting to get some stuff in.  I've seen these Trachys at two different Lowe's now ( League City and Livingston TX) but it looks like each store is only getting 2 because they both had the same Monrovia pallets with the same plants on them.  I know Trachys aren't rare but these are the biggest I've seen at a big box.  6g, no price posted and sku doesn't pull anything up online.20250210_103952.thumb.jpg.057b8ce1c8548d28db8c604343eaa82b.jpg20250210_103957.thumb.jpg.0648f39977ee422690722c54d080709c.jpg

The Chamaedorea were also at the Livingston Lowe's on clearance.  I'm almost positive they're Seifrizii and I've never seen Seifrizii sold in anything other than the big 7g that they have intermittently in the summer.  These rang up for $13.

I've never seen one for sale around here at any sort of garden center or nursery.  The only time I've seen them is through marketplace sellers.

As far as the big box they haven't stopped stocking palms around me this year.  Its the usual - Washingtonia, Queen, Trachy, Butia and Chamaerops for the outdoor ones.  The Butias didn't show up until August or September.

My lowe’s sells the same palms you mentioned + livistona, rhapis, chamaedorea, and at one point a lot of phoenix sylvestris. For some reason they never restocked sylvester’s after the grand opening even tho they sold, only got roebs now…

Also to me the european fan prices are ridiculous. They want 75 for a small clump of palms that aren’t even growing fully divided leaves. Basically premium dirt with a dash of palm 😤

Saw they had windmills, Washingtonias, pindos, Pygmy’s and Sylvester’s as well…was hoping to find a decent sized mule palm

No palms, but I saw a pallet of aspen(Populus tremuloides) in Rio Rancho, NM Lowes.

This year the palms never left. All the usual culprits were available. They’ve been bringing in fresh stock though. The only thing that has stood out to me are the single Phoenix roebellinii that I have seen.

Thanks for asking. I think its too early to say. I have considered trunk cutting but I am holding off for a few (hopeful) reasons:
- There's still a few fronds left with green.
- After I uncovered the plant, there was rapid die off of fronds when weather heated up, however, that seems to have stabilized now.
- Weather has been dry and sunny, not very conducive to fungal growth. I am home and able to treat it with copper fungicide every week. Our area has a fire ban now.
- Fronds didn't pull from all too deep. Visibility into the crown is low but I just tried to see how deep I can push a thin metal stake in the hole and I am getting some resistance already at 2-3 inches.

Its not looking great from the outside but I'll wait a few more weeks and keep monitoring!

we think it comes back and hope it. they are strong. the example with the resistance also speaks for this. in the picture it looks to us as if it is coming back

The Ventura Lowe’s used to have loads of palms , many varieties . Now , it’s just very poor selection of common stuff. I haven’t checked HD lately but they have been the same as Lowe’s when I checked. Years ago you could find Wodyetia , Licuala , and Hyophorbe , no more. 🫤Harry

Are you sure that's not a Dracaena Florida Beauty?  I know Lowe's typically sells them in the 4" pots.

Never seen Serenoa at a big box store outside of Florida!  I can't tell a catarinensis from the highly variable odorata except for the seed shape/size.  I understand that catarinensis are more common in Florida so it's certainly possible.

$99. 15-gal triple Pigmy dates. 6" to 12" trunks at Lowes.

Across at HD, $79 for some smaller ones. These ($99) are the better buy.

I've only seen Serenoa in small, family-owned nurseries.

Walking through the local big box stores the past few days, I realize there is no L.chinensis. Now I have to think about last year; Did I see Livistonas in the stores in 2024?

I've never seen one in a big box before and I've been looking for almost 10 years now.

I've seen L. Chinese a fair amount at the orange store but not yet this year.  They put them in with the indoor plants at least here in Missouri.  Usually tucked in next to ZZ plants and fiddle leaf figs. They seem to plant a bunch of seedlings in one pot. Go figure they'd be here where yet you can't find them in Houston where they should thrive.

It's one of the most common palms in Houston and used to be sold everywhere 10-15 years back until one day they just disappeared for mysterious reasons

I gotta admire the dedication to all of those cold climate growers who never  give up on growing. I would pack up and go home in such a cold climate after the first frost. Keep up the good gardening work.

I have seen them twice for sale in Houston.  At JRN and Enchanted Forest.  The ones at JRN are a decent price and small singles, but the the Enchanted Garden ones are seriously overpriced.  There are a few in my neighborhood but they took a lot of frond damage last year.

They used to be sold by all of the box stores, HGC, etc that's why you see them everywhere. I have a few volunteer seedlings I kept, they self-seed a ton especially before the mini ice age
