I recently had a spear pull on two Pygmy date palm trunks i had been suspicious were dying. All new growth on the palms (two smaller ones left) were pulled successfully. I decided to then clean up the palm and i have dug a hole to put the remaining palm in the ground. I also have transplanted the pindo i bought in December of 2023 or January of 2024 into the ground. Since it’s transplanting into the ground about two weeks ago growth has already noticeably increased. It’s in a spot that provides it some shade in the mornings but still a good amount of sun, so far transplant shock has been at a minimum and i cannot find any visible damage. The spot provides enough space for it to expand its trunk but some fronds will still get pushed against the fence but other than that i have no worries for it and it and the remaining trunk of the Pygmy date palm seem to be doing pretty good.

Keep in mind that the trunk will be way bigger around ( twice the size!) than the bucket you have . Butia also have viscous thorns on the petioles when they get bigger. Not a good palm for a narrow space . You should be ok for a few years but after that , it could be a problem . HarryIMG_3776.thumb.jpeg.bf54939f46ae9681df9cba212e0f7df8.jpeg

This is what it will eventually become! When it was shorter it was deadly to brush up against . Now that it is taller , not so much of a problem . The girth is one of the largest palms I have. That is why it is on my hill . HarryIMG_0667.thumb.jpeg.662c1ad41016f06c02301161a8d65f8d.jpeg

That is a 12” wide pail .IMG_0669.thumb.jpeg.61e9c557b06868a5eba56bce8d88933f.jpeg

This shows how large these get. Granted , it takes a while , but they are very large palms with gnarly teeth!

Ok thank you for telling me. The photo makes the space look small but it has about 3 feet around it (extending from the trunk to the closest part of the fence). My main worry is for when the fronds do eventually get bigger (i know how big they get I’ve seen them).

Congrats on the planting. It’ll be a beautiful palm very shortly. I do agree that it might be too close to the wall though, moreso because of the trunk than the fronds which for butias tend to be more compact in sunny areas.

If you've got 3 feet of space from the trunk to the fence you should be OK.  I put this Butia in the corner of my small yard in San Antonio about 2 feet away from the fence.  The fronds brushed up against the fence and eventually over the top but no issues.  Trunk was about 20" in diameter.  The petiole thorns are close to the trunk so no problem for me.  Butia are quite variable so some are worse than others.
