we became it at the end of october 2024. described as a syagrus romanzoffiana santa catarina.

first we placed it in the window in the living room with lots of light and

sun and watered it every 6 days. As

substrate we took palm soil.

It just didn't grow until the end of January.

then Sabine simply planted it in the raised bed in the balcony, she got the palm as a present.

and since then it has grown.

we had also wrapped it with fleece and then removed everything yesterday

how does it look from your point of view?

I was already despairing a bit because the little one just didn't grow . .

It looks fine to me. They are very slow as seedlings . The strap leaves will get large for at least two years before starting to form more pinnate fronds. This one popped up almost two years ago next to its parent. Harryimage.thumb.jpg.2863fde31c00e432c5756a0d94894105.jpg

In a temperate climate they can grow quickly once they move beyond “strap leaf “ stage. I have quite a few popping up in the yard and in containers.

your queens are beautiful.

How old are they? They also look huge, over 25 ft/ 7,5m easily my estimate!?

What was the lowest temperature they experienced? And how did they react?

Hello Mazat

they resisted -5.6 degrees celsius in January 2017, no signs of suffering, temperatures never seen, this year we never went below zero,
they are very tall, the fo made from seed in the 80s

The parent is at least 30’ tall. I planted a bunch of them over 25 years ago for canopy . I have a few that grew much faster that others even though they were all the same size when planted. HarryIMG_4133.thumb.jpeg.4cfe1c471baada64fca471d115bb46ea.jpeg

They easily out paced almost anything else I planted . This is right after tree trimming just before fall last year. To the right is a Venezuelan Royal that is marginal for growing in my climate.IMG_4165.thumb.jpeg.6bd54c832b28018f6e6f89fb4793fea0.jpeg

This Caryota Urens was the only palm that kept up with the Syagrus R.

Hallo Mazat

Thank you Gyuseppe for your explanations and comments.

That is amazing and good that it survived -5.6 degrees Celsius without damage.

Yes, it is huge and already so old, wow.

She has had two brief periods of -1.5 degrees Celsius and -2 degrees Celsius here on the balcony in February and a few times around 0 degrees Celsius at night during the day, always between 5-20 degrees Celsius.

My coldest temps here are 38f or 3.3c. I consider my climate warm temperate with no frost on my particular lot . One city block down a steep hill below me there is frost occasionally. It is heaven for a lot of palms! Harry

Harry

we had and have around 53 frostdays on average the last 30 years if I do the math for the community garden below.

the daytime temperatures are usually above 0, downstairs often 5 - 15 degrees Celsius so well in the plus range in contrast to the surroundings usually 3 degrees Celsius and more colder than us.We are happy about that
