New Sabal hybrids at Plant Delights - palmetto x causiarum and causiarum x palmetto

In case you haven't seen them Tony Avent has 2 new hardy Sabal hybrids on sale at Plant Delights.  They aren't in the catalog. I ordered two of "Just Cause" (CxP) back in January and one "Me Too" (PxC) a little later when it came out.  I received huge (relatively speaking) palms in 4 inch pots this week.  All had that hard round root pushing hard through the bottom of the pot, so they can't stand up on their own.  I Paid $28 per palm.  I transplanted one to a 5 gallon pot and it looks perfectly at home.  I plan to but the other 2 in the ground in Colington where they will do better.  According to Tony "seed are from the famed hardy palm garden of Joe Le Vert at Aquinas High School in Augusta, GA. "

Grab these while you can! I am very happy with these plants.

Those appear very healthy and ready for the growing season ahead. Keep us in the loop as they grow on.

I just potted up a bunch of this hybrid from seeds that I germinated. . Seeds sourced from @Bigfish  He may still have some available, but the seeds are from Florida. I’m pretty sure @Sabal King has some seedlings available as well from the same Florida source. A couple of good backups if Plant Delights runs out.

if y’all remember the posts on here about the beastly Sabal known affectionately as Megatron a few years back it was this cross. And I do live in Texas now so the y’all is considered mandatory language.

Yeah the ones I have are from palms on the UF campus.  I do still have seeds.

I moved to Texas from Montana. It took me 6-7 years but yeah, y’all is a normal part of my vocabulary now.

Our seed source is @Bigfish and I have some about two year old palmetto x causiarum and they are positively huge.  I took a few and put them in the ground.  These are barely two years old, they surprise me with the size of the strap leaf , both width and size.  Very unique

also have 150+ first year seedlings that are following in these footsteps.  Very unique palm!  The young ones I planted last spring did really well in 11f weather and nearly 60 hours below freezing this past winter!!
