Howdyall:

Heading to Florida, no set plans, open to suggestion.

Thought about the Greyhound thing, but what about trains?  Are there any truly good rental car deals where you don't get ripped off?

Not sure about anywhere else but the rental cars here in Palm Beach charge more if you fly in.  Hertz has deals for a week or more with unlimited mileage.  They also have very economical models.  I don't know about the other agencies.  I think most of them charge more if you return it to a different place than you rented it.

Train service isn't great.  Bus service is worse.  Floridians, like many Californians, have not adapted well to public transportation!

It is season here in south Florida so hotels will be more than at other times of the year.

The Sunset Limited has a horrible record for being anywhere near on time, but it goes from  LA to Tucson, San Antonio, New Orleans (Lafayette?), and Orlando.  Not bad.  You can readily get a car in Orlando (check Enterprise).

Orlando has public transit (Lynx), but you're really better off driving.  In Miami, getting around is difficult, period.

I rode th ecity bus everywhere in Miami for a week and it wasn't too bad. It was less than a dollar to go from South Beach to Downtown  (this has been a while ago) whereas the cab fare for that ride was $40

Dave,

What ever it takes......just get here. If you need a guide/driver for the day, I'm your man. :P Pick-up truck, row boat, bicycle, or even the 6' unicycle ( might be slow and hard with both of us on it...LOL!!) No insurance papers to fill out, gas is dirt cheap these days, and if a few french fries fall between the seat, no worries! :D

Wow, Jeff that's great.

Dave, Jeff took my wife and I around for a good bit of the day. Very hospitable and personable. We even rode through some neighborhoods nearby that had some incredible landscaping. He's a great person and guide.

Hey Jeff, How about a palm job for me!? I'd love to quit the ice cream business and move to FL. I need an outdoor job!! :D

Dave, you still open for advice?  I just got back from 6 days in Florida.  I flew in to Ft. Lauderdale, drove to Hollywood, Miami, Coral Gables; then Naples, Venice, St. Pete, and Tampa.  Car rental was too expensive for me ($162 total, plus ~$65 gas) but that's because FLL rentals are much more expensive than off-site or MIA rentals.  Plus my dropoff location was TPA, so I couldn't do a name-your-own price deal.

I got a nice hotel with a kitchen and fantastic complimentary breakfast for $50/night on priceline near MIA airport.

I have tons of advice, and tons of pictures if you are still interested.

PS- I really wish I had time to visit you when I was in LA 2 weeks ago.  Will have to go again sometime.
