Long story short, I noticed my Washingtonia (Mexican fan palm) were starting to lose color. This got me thinking until I saw my dog peeing on them. I started removing the old soil and adding new soil  with fertilizer. I am not an expert, but here are some photos.

They are very important to me, as I brought them from California to North Carolina.

Any suggestions?

I would hold off on fertilizer until you see green emerging growth. Just keep them watered and Rover away, where Rover goes , nothing grows! Harry

Looks like freeze damage. I have always had dogs and have never had a single palm die from them getting peed on. How cold did it get where you are last winter? Those are zone 9 palms, 8b at best, and I don’t think there are any zone 9 areas in NC.

I mixed the fertilzer since I got worried.

They never had an issue it's been a year.

For a minute, I thought about that. I had a protective cover for the freeze/snow that I purchased from Amazon.

It was in the low teens. We had sleet, freezing rain, and snow.

My other two Mexican fan palms (not in the photo) did not have the protector, and they look super healthy.

@SJ92 Washingtonia Filifera (the type in CA) don't particularly like Southeastern humidity.  Washingtonia Robusta grow in the SE.  I have not attempted growing either myself, maybe someone else here has tried growing Filifera in NC?
