Filifera spear pull help

Hey guys my parents have two filiferas after some rain here in Rio Rancho NM and a cold front one of there palms had spear pull any way we could bring it back any tips or ideas would be helpful I was going to give them copper fungicide ?

How large are these?

By now, temperatures are rising and hydrogen peroxide may be sufficient as the growing season restarts.

There about 3 ft tall I would say .

Trunk cut first. I use a reciprocating saw.  

Then hydrogen peroxide. 

Looks pretty young. May be gone. 

I got 1 "grove of 18 month seedlings that survived, 4 of 5 seedlings.  So I suggest seeding in place if possible.  All my potted transplants died.  Just a thought.

Ok for sure thanks guys I’m gonna try cutting it then will apply peroxide.

I cut this Washy back to healthy growth . It's coming back nicely .

Now that it's warming up, Irrigate it everyday for a month. I never tried the trunk cut but I've heard it works. And yes, use peroxide!

I've wondered about this "trunk cut" strategy, & if it's repeated with regular frequency. Is this a one off emergency step only? I can't see a borderline palm being subjected to too much surgery or what it would eventually look like.

It is not actually the trunk that is being cut as the cut must be close to, or above the meristem.  So, therefore, no damage to the trunk.  You are cutting thru actual leaf bases. 

At least that is what I have seen on mine.  

1 successful, 1 not.

4 years later, cannot tell. 

I used to think the same.

OK, so the name "trunk cut" is incorrectly named.

Looks like trunk until you realize palms don't have rings.

I would imagine you should see movement this week, if alive. 

If the center white part is mushy/slimy and not firm, it is probably gone. 

Looks like it was gonna be a fatty!

Don't give up on it because I had a Sabal palmetto that when I pulled  on  the spear the entire center came out and since it was a small palm and the trunk was close to the ground it left a hole in the ground . I didn't put fungicide or anything in the hole because I was sure it was a goner . I happened to be near the palm on a  hot July day and damn if it was growing out again .

I would make sure that you get down into that mushy part and scoop it out till you get to live tissue , and then peroxide and fungicide can keep it free of bacteria . Then when the heat kicks in during the summer you may be surprised .

Thanks guys I cut down till the middle was solid with some peroxide poured on top I will keep you guys posted … So I have a trachy in my yard the cold pretty much took all the fronds it’s about two feet of trunk with zero protection it seems like it dried up no spear pull I do see a green tip deep in the hole but it’s not doing anything no movement at all any ideas ?

Keep well watered.

Wait for it to push since it did not pull. 

Here, they are slower to recover than washies and take about 1.5 growing seasons to regain a full head. Longer if not properly watered. 

They are tuff, good luck. 

That said, there are Trachy experts on here, way more in tune on this species than I will ever be. 

Might want to do a separate post to get those experts involved.

Hey jwitt - have any pics of your seedlings that survived over the winter? I’m curious what kind of protection you used.
