How'd you make out in the FL Cold Snap?

If it makes anyone feel any better. It didn't freeze last night up here in the NW along the coast. Tonight the local guys are only calling for 26 bone chilling degrees. I would think that if it doesn't get any colder than that all the way up here, then you guys down there might be spared......at least along the coasts. All bets are off for you inland folks.

It's almost midnight here and the temps have just now hit freezing.........the upper twenties should only last a couple of hours........I hope.

Larry,Your maps and graphics on all your posts are extremely well done and must be time consuming.Hope your palms and plants do equally as well through this Winter.

What you look for is what is looking

Yes, Larry's detailed temperature posts with illustrations are awesome - thanks, Larry!

The forecast low of 26F for Orlando turned out to be a half hour at 31.8 at 7 am this morning. Here's hoping that this will turn out to be the coldest night of the season.

Pinellas had very different results.  Where we are, our lowest temp was about 35, no freeze.  I am still amazed.  We were the only ones in our neighborhood who protected anything, and I haven't observed any damage on the exposed plants - the foxies, adonidias, bottles and lutescens.

Someone I work with, who lives just a few miles away, had temps around 32.  She couldn't believe we were warmer - but we're higher up.

Over in Pinellas Park, also a lower area, there were icicles in some bushes - guess someone ran the sprinklers on them.  I saw a number of shrubs covered in blankets, and in the midst was a totally unprotected - very large - lutescens.  It looked to be all right.

I'm just grateful that our temps didn't drop below 35.  Elevation really helps, as does being under the flight path of the airport.

And... my unprotected allamanda is still blooming

I was just checking the weather, seems that some parts of north florida will get it as bad or worse tonight than last night.  I feel for you.

I saw tons of groubnd icicles on my ride to work yesterday in the citrus groves.  Many of them seemed to have turned on their ground misters.

My Arenga micrantha looks unhappy after 21F.

Its under pretty good canopy and I am surprised that it is giving me the plant equivalent of a frown.

Bombax ceiba is a big brown fire hazard.  It should have little to no limb damage as it is doing what is does in response to cold in a normal way, that is a fast brown up and then leaf drop, leaf drop should be in the next couple of days.  My big jakfruit will be dropping leaves shortly but is ok also.

I do not think I will have any loses here, just  a lot of foliar damage.  As for palms, some angry brown spots here and there, but one summer should be all I need to recover.

My salacca wallichiana look fine (in ground but in wind protected spot) my Areca catechu look more or less fine, two with almost no damage, one with one upright new frond a brown flag of defeat but the other fronds are dandy.

My V. spendida had grown into the ground through the pot and I could not move it without digging.  I covered it with some fleece and it looks perfect, a little surprised.  I have not moved this palm in 3 or 4 winters now, looks very good despite being tortured like this for so long, it is about 6 feet overall.

So this cold snapped sucked but could have sucked much worse.
