In the same area of Pompano Beach as the Cocos in the previous post, was this Washingtonia, leaning somewhat from a hurricane hit a couple of years ago. Note the adventitious roots developing from about three feet up the trunk:

Ken leaning them can in my experience lead them to form the adventious root mass, like the boss on a cape buffalo

not always tho, somtimes a bit of a nick can cause it too.

I read someone saying in your coconut thread it could be caused by roundup, I have not had that happen and we spray alot of glyphos products. I have also seen it happen where I know for a fact no herbicides were ever applied.
